March 6, 200620 yr In regards to Tony Graffanino who is also mentioned in the article, the Red Sox are trying to find him a home where he can get significant playing time. He would seem to be a better fit than Reese, and considering we won't be paying Pokey $800k, Graffanino's $2.05 million is more like $1.25 million (additional). Graffanino can play 2B-SS-3B which could be invaluable and provide Girardi with a myriad of options, and he certainly hit well last season. Earlier in the off-season, when it wasn't yet apparent how deep the sell-off would become I had suggested with Gozalez going into free agency and Castillo due a big chunk of dough in both salary and bonus, that replacing the two with Graffanino and Grudzielanek might make for a less expensive but still talented tandem in the middle of the infield. I still like Tony and if the Marlins do acquire him, I believe he'd be a valuable asset. He's going somewhere, might as well be here. I agree with you 100%. He'd be a great addition. Good call. Since we are basically sitting on the lowest payroll ever in the modern era I think we could handle this one, last quality pickup. Would this even put us over 20mill?
March 6, 200620 yr If I remember correctly "we" (like it's "our" $$$$ ) are approximately $15 million onfield and $19-$20 million overall (Pudge, Leiter, when we paid Valdez, etc.). That would include Pokey's $800k which is now out of the equation.
March 6, 200620 yr but Tony wants to go somewhere where he will be the everyday starter Im not saying he couldnt beat Uggla, but Dan would still get every opportunity at that spot anyway, Im partial to Super Joe
March 6, 200620 yr but Tony wants to go somewhere where he will be the everyday starter Im not saying he couldnt beat Uggla, but Dan would still get every opportunity at that spot anyway, Im partial to Super Joe Tony could see playing time at 2B, SS and 3B during the season. I don't think finding the guy adequate playing time on this team would be a problem. (Comments above are not anti-Shadez, Uggla or anyone else) May I add, if Dan Uggla made the roster as this team's utility infielder he'd still be a very happy fellow.
March 6, 200620 yr Joe McEwing? Super Joe? A name I havent heard much of in a long time, but I think we have hit our quota of former Cardinals career minor leaguers/bench warmers with Seabol. Why not just let him be the utility guy?
March 6, 200620 yr Whatever his problem is, he had time to clean out his apartment but couldn't pick up a phone and let the Fish know he wasn't coming back. No credibility in my eyes. You give notice when you quit your job. Common courtesy. Agreed! Completely unprofessional. There is NO reason to not call your employer to advise of an unexpected leave. I think its great that this happened now. Do you want to pay a guy $800,000 who is clearly not a leader and may be a negative influence on young players. I really was looking forward to Pokey playing second base but this was straight out of Low Class, Nevada. We hardly knew ya Pokey. but Tony wants to go somewhere where he will be the everyday starter Im not saying he couldnt beat Uggla, but Dan would still get every opportunity at that spot anyway, Im partial to Super Joe Yeah I agree....Super Joe is the next logical step in sinking to a new low for a MLB franchise. Im hearing a new slogan...."The Florida Marlins.....We suck but we have a whole lotta hustle"
