September 10, 200322 yr :censored With this team enjoy the second best season in team history, all the media down here can say "enjoy the run" :fyou With this team coming home after a 5-1 road trip(if they win today), to play for possibly the biggest games of the season against the Braves the media says "difficult choices next season" At top of the WC they come up with this :censored I listen yesterday to talk radio, patheic those guy don't care. They are just waiting for the crash, the fall, the failure of basically they want this team to go away, so they could talk(full time) about that overrated, overhype, patheic, old, boring a$$ Dolphins. The print (some)media has improve and really is making a effort to generate interest in this magical season but this crap by Dave George is not right or the right time. You have all offseason to bang your heads and fill that empty space in the back of the sports page over this subject. The only reason they would do this is to bring a negative light on this bright spot in this town RIGHT NOW!!! Whats wrong you want to kill those fans that support this team, the positive feeling about this team?Hidden Agenda????Its total BS :fyou http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/conten...c720ac0077.html
September 10, 200322 yr This "patronizing" (at best) media attitude drives me nuts. I can't even listen to WQAM anymore (used to listen a lot, but not much the past 6 months.) Pompous jack-asses led by Hank Goldberg (who got his job on the coat-tails of his father.) And when they do get a phone-in on the Marlins, it comes from someone who apparently has never been to a Marlins game. QAM is going down the tubes as a Sports Station. They just suck-up Football (year' round!) Would be great to have a real Sports Radio station in South Florida.
September 10, 200322 yr Author This town need a guy like Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton from San Diego. I've been out there listen to Sports Radio. Its great, they talk Chargers Football and Padres Baseball in the same breath. Why do you think the Padres attendance doesn't drop even with a loser product like the Padres. The Sports hosts really support the Padres but Lee really knows everthing Hockey, Basketball, College Football. Its really enjoyable radio. This town is scared to learn anything other than football, don't get me wrong I enjoy the sport(football) but I would like a Total Sports Radio to listen to. Not some former Dolphin with a hidden agenda or a fat toad trying to get ahead by showing ESPN his knowledge of profootball. Its a shame :confused but we must be heard :thumbup
September 10, 200322 yr Sorry this is long but I've got some things to say here. You know, I really fail to see what the big hysteria is over next year's payroll. But I've come to expect nothing else from the media but the cries of "enjoy it while it lasts". "Oh my god if they keep the current team together the payroll will be over 80 million!!! The whole team's going to be traded away! It'll be 1998 all over again! Let's all riot!" 1. Pudge Rodriguez was brought in for 1 season and 1 season only. I mean why do you people think they had to defer his salary over 3 years??!! No matter how many warm & fuzzy things he says about south florida, they can't afford him next year unless he takes an enormous pay cut, and Pudge is well aware of that. So is Scott Boras. No one should be shocked or surprised, or even disillusioned that he won't be back. I'm happy that they were able to go out acquire a player of his calibur to help get the team over the hump this year. And keep in mind that apparently every team in the league inquires about Ramon Castro in trade offers. 2. Urbina was brought in to bandage a struggling bullpen and also will not be back next year. There are pieces you add to complete a team when it's apparent they can make a run. That's why Urbina was brought here. It can happen again next year. If they're in the running & need a bullpen arm, they'll go out & get one. They've proven that. Yes of course I'd like to keep Uggy. But are you going to pay a reliever more than any of your starters make? (I suppose they could try to keep Uggy and let let Looper go instead...) 3. The signing of Conine hints that Derek Lee will probably be gone. No one's (well ok some are...) happy about that, but it's not the end of the world. Either Lee or Castillo will have to go if there's any chance of keeping Lowell long term because all three are due for fat raises. Suddenly from 80 million you're already under 60 million. Knock off Vladimir Nunez, maybe an Andy Fox, add in the adjusted revenue sharing numbers expected next year at around 4 million, and bingo, you're down in the mid 50 million figures & close to what this year started at. Was that so hard? Castro starts for Pudge. Conine starts for Lee. Spoony starts for Urbina. (well, ok Spoony's injury screwed up my plans here, but maybe Chad Fox or someone else can do the job). Point is, it's not the end of the world. And would somebody please tell me why the front office should increase payroll anyway? Should they be encouraged by the huge crowds of 10 and 12 thousand people who show up for a team fighting for the playoffs?

Not some former Dolphin with a hidden agenda or a fat toad trying to get ahead by showing ESPN his knowledge of profootball. Its a shame :confused but we must be heard :thumbup Actually Hank had a pretty good line the other day... Some guy called up whining about "why should we go out & watch a team if it might not be together next year?" Hank's response was look, let's say Diane Lane offers to spend the night with you, but there's a possibility you may never see her again after that. Would you turn her down just because of that?? Just because the experience might not happen again doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy it.
September 10, 200322 yr Look man forget the media they will shut up when we make the playoffs we just gotta concentrate on the games,if the media says we suck then whatever, but at the end we will have the last laugh.
September 10, 200322 yr Hotcorner, As you suggested, attendance is the bottom-line. There's no new stadium when we're drawing only 12,000 in a Play-Off run. Marlins were created in large measure because it was believed that the Latino (great baseball fans) would support the team. Latino players were hired to foster that. Didn't happen. I don't know why. Stadium location? Price of tickets? Too many of us Senior fans who don't want to drive I-95 at night? I don't know. But, it's hard to be optimistic, despite having a great Marlins team.
September 10, 200322 yr HC dont forget about all the deferred salaries. I'm including Hampton and Pudge's deferred money.
September 10, 200322 yr Author My opinion its location and a little media trashing. With 80 games held there every year, fans don't like to travel 30-40 min on average to go to a weekday game. I've always said that stadium is built in the perfect location for an event once or twice a week, not for a 80 game season. Parking doesn't help either. The media is another sour subject that I don't see an end to. They don't like being wrong(they were wrong about ownership and the team this year) and probable have the same or great egoes than sports athlete. I honestly believe some are driven to destroy the baseball market down here. You have to blind not to see it, but really the question is why?
September 10, 200322 yr If it weren't for WQAM, the Marlins would be averaging at least 18,000 a game. I am tired of them, they should be pulled off the air.
September 10, 200322 yr If it weren't for WQAM, the Marlins would be averaging at least 18,000 a game. I am tired of them, they should be pulled off the air. Why is wqam a problem?
September 10, 200322 yr WQAM's owner Beasley did not like John Henry or for that matter Jeff Loria. So they did all they could to put the team down, remember? Last season during that roadtrip after the All-Star Break? Friedman "They are going to sell off the enitre team and contract it by 2005 at the latest." Big O "Marlins suck, they need to be folded." Now the Big O (Friedman got fired, and Ferral was hired in his place thank goodness) has the eat crow cause the Marlins are winning. How convenient people forgive WQAM for all they have done.
September 10, 200322 yr I hate those basterds on WQAM! Especially the Big O (I hate that damn accent) and that fat a** Hank Goldberg. These people are so negative!!! The Marlins' attendance is reeking, but we will get 75,000 this weekend. 25 on Friday! 30 on Saturday! 20 on Sunday!

The Marlins' attendance is reeking, but we will get 75,000 this weekend. 25 on Friday! 30 on Saturday! 20 on Sunday! My dad and I driving to PPS from up here in Cape Coral on Saturday. The weather should be fine and it will be a classic Marlins vs. Braves matchup. Since it is a 6 PM start, we will leave at 3:00PM or so and get there at about 5:30 PM. We will leave at about 9:15 PM and get back home at about midnight. I think it is well worth it and since it is a Saturday night, there is no worry of school/work the next day. Alot of people I have talked to are planning on doing the same.
September 10, 200322 yr The Dolphins suck - football is overrated. It is a sport that will never posess the subtle grace that baseball has. Baseball is for the intellectual whereas football is for the sheep who needs to be told what to do. I have always said that JRS is not good for baseball because of its location and, like Ed pointed out, for 81 games it is not very convenient. The Marlins have to choose a market and stick with it. They have to locate in either Dade or Broward and lure the fans by being closer and more convenient to get to. The fans will come out, it will take time. Now, for some quotes from today's show: "The Dolphins should learn from the Marlins" - caller on WQAM Goldberg pulls out the one night stand with Meg Ryan to make his point about enjoying this team. Funny how the bandwagon can even hold him...
September 10, 200322 yr Goldberg pulls out the one night stand with Meg Ryan to make his point about enjoying this team. Funny how the bandwagon can even hold him... Marlins got the bandwagon outfitted with those wheelchair slots, perfect to fit him in.

September 10, 200322 yr I hate Hank Goldberg more than anyone else in the media. That man makes me so mad as he is always blasting the Marlins. Now he is on the bandwagon. I'm going Saturday and Sunday. I can't drive, and my parents are out of town Friday, so Friday might be the last game of the year played in Miami, that I don't attend. I saw Around the Horn too, but I don't need to listen to anyone's opinion but myself. We just won 11 of 13! Why would we slip now? Philly's bullpen don't scare me!
