A league source said infielder Tomas Perez cleared waivers, meaning that no team chose to pick up the $700,000 that Perez is owed for this season.

The Phillies can assign him to the minors, but Perez could ask for his release. If granted, he almost certainly could hook on with another team, such as the Marlins, who still haven't replaced Pokey Reese.

Perez seems to be the odd man out and might have already been traded had Bell's back been sound. Bell hopes to play in his first Grapefruit League game tomorrow.

 

 

I'd welcome him....he always annoyed me as a Marlin fan because he was cocky but at least we'll have a new pie man.

I think you guys hate on Amezaga a little to much. By no means is he a starting calibre player, but I think he can be a good bench player. He hit .288 for his career in the minors (.341 in AAA last year in 185 AB), and has drawn a walk every 10 or so AB. He also plays excellent defense. Pecota pegs his 50th percentile forecast at .232/.289/.305. Is this good? No, but.....

 

Tomas Perez hit .233/.289/.277 last year, and career .244/.300/.351. Has a little more slugging potential. Is this a big deal?

 

We already have a weak hitting backup middle infielder, that plays slick defense, in Amezaga. I think if the team is looking for another 2B to add to the mix (which they damn well should), it should be someone who can bring some thunder.

 

Keith Ginter is a name I'm thinking off the top of my head. Career .243/.329/.422. If we can get him for relatively nothing, I think he's the right guy (assuming Graffanino goes to play for a contender) among all the names being floated.

Graffanino got picked up by the Royals, so he's moot.

 

I agree with MLou on Amezega, but I want another backup infield option than can step in if Uggla falters.

 

Lastly, I don't think a move for a Perez/Bynum/Ginter would be made in the context of displacing Uggla. It's his job to lose right now so stop worrying.
