I know Charlotte isn't the city we're worried about, but it WAS on the list, so it's good to see it getting knocked off.

HARLOTTE, N.C. ? Major League Baseball could pose a major problem for the city of Charlotte.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the Florida Marlins have confirmed they have their eye on the Queen City, but Mayor Pat McCrory says Charlotte cannot support another major league sport and he has no plans to lobby Marlins officials.

The mayor also questions how the city would generate the $500 dollars needed to build the ballpark.

Jerry Reese, the Charlotte real estate lawyer who hopes to raise the money to build a major league stadium in Second Ward, did not meet the April 1 deadline of bringing an updated proposal to the table.

County officials say they will concentrate on plans to build a new uptown stadium for the Charlotte Knights. The Knights currently play in Fort Mill, S.C.

The mayor also questions how the city would generate the $500 dollars needed to build the ballpark.

They know how to build a park for 500 dollars? Why are we not talking to these people about how we could get that done down here?

Well, $500 gets you the model, then you slather The Clear or The Cream on it and, whammo -- instant full-size big league ballpark!

This is good to hear. The fewer options there are the better our chances are.

they had the hornett and lost them in less than a decade you had your chance BYE BYE stick to that fast growing sport called HOCKEY PPPPP

Charlotte...gone

Portland....so long

Vegas....game over (AAA might even leave town)

Norfolk.....nope

San Antonio is the only "competitor" or "suitor" left.

Hialeah... ..........

I wouldn't write off Norfolk yet. They haven't said they've given up.

Portland's at the same position as Dade County. Clueless how to complete financing.

Dade County is not clueless.

We have a gap, that gap has to be covered by either private or public dollars. Isn't very difficult.

bye charlotte

That gap has been there for 2 years. Same as Portland. If Dade had any reasonable idea of how to close it, they'd be breaking ground by now. Object to the word 'clueless' if you want, but the point stands.

They know how to close it. The problem is certain people have not wanted to close it. The matter here is not if it can be done, the matter is whether it should be done...and if so, how.

Ever since DC got it's team the market for baseball teams has been slim pickings

If the certain people whom must agree to it don't want to assume that responsibility, how is the county's request a reasonable solution to the problem? How can it even be considered a possibility after two years, in which the gap has grown further apart? How can you even be optimistic that a breakthrough will come?

New players are constantly entering the game and there are many others willing to enter the game. How about you drop the nonsense and watch the news as it happens.

San Antonio looks like it may be shot down like a duck in hunting season, yet all you did is take hits at South Florida.

Fact is we have money on the table here not needing further voter approval. We have businesses willing to buy luxury suites. We have a "very" lucrative TV contract signed and in action. We have the population to support this team. South Florida is a major league market, right now San Antonio has not proven that it is.

I fully agree one market is better than the other, but not so much that it's worth it for the Marlins to stay at Huizenga's park or cough up an additional $150M more than they have to get a profitable stadium. We've beaten this point to death.

However, the lack of a credible deal elsewhere is not necessarily a credit to South Florida. That Charlotte bows out, it does not help the Marlins and Dade clear the gap. That sticking point exists now just as it did many months ago. Until there's a breakthrough on that issue, please spare us your promises.

$150M is 30 annual payments of $5M plus interest. :whistle

The sticking points that existed a few months ago aren't as big today. Things are being worked out. Like Cape said the county and city are finalizing a few things.

as for PORTLAND they are trying to keep the trailblazers MSFT mega bucks Paul Allen say trailblazers will lose 100mil next 3 years and wants to sell the team or TADA wants a Brand New Staduim or 200 mil in Improvements... so ORE _GONE is out of the question

I wasn't aware the funding gap had decreased. Are price for materials decling? What about land prices? Are we in a recession? Is Hialeah offering to close the gap?

No, Cape. There's already $212M on the table. While some of that will come from naming rights (JUST AS IT WILL IN SAN ANTONIO!). There's still a $100M gap. To make things easy, let's ASSUME the Marlins agree to a greater rent to put them at $250M (that's only 30% of the gap and there's presently no plan from the Marlins to add any additional allocations and no solution that issue despite 2 years in trying by Dade). That's a $3M rent in San Antonio, and more than double that in South Florida. Cetainly not a great deal for the Marlins. Worth it to roll the dice on the promise that is South Florida, with its greater market size? Perhaps, but not clearly. Atleast not in my mind.

Granted there's a lot of things Bexar needs to do before it even gets to where Dade is at now. Dade is the only party that has funds earmarked for the project, but with it stuck in the mud on its most important issue (funding) for 2 years. Bexar. offering far less issues with land and stadium features, is a promising option to be pursued. Even a South Florida partisan such as yourself must agree with that.

Robaina confirmed the gap is not as big as it was a few months ago.

if it was like a $70 gap i'd totally throw down.

One can only imagine that's because of land, correct? Which hasn't been finalized yet.
