UDB hearings

Featured Replies

Cape, you posted great news in your Stadium blog site. This may be what Mayor Robaina had in mind when he said he expected a major announcement by the end of April.

You expect passage of the motion to alter the UDB to accommodate the stadium site in Hialeah Heights.

How sure are you of that?

In any case, we need to remind our commissioners that we want them to help keep the Marlins here. I encourage every fan to at least e-mail their commissioner today or tomorrow urging them to do so.

I think everything depends on this vote. The future of the Marlins in South Florida may depend on this. The Hialeah Heights site is the one that, in my opinion, is best suited for fans in Broward and Palm Beach County due to the proximity to the turnpike. (I live in South Dade. I don't care where they put the darn thing as long as a deal gets done)

Thanks Cape, for your updates.

Before anyone gets too excited about hearings being scheduled next week, keep in mind the opposition to moving the UDB is well organized and includes commissioner Katy Sorenson. Organizations such as CleanWater, Tropical Audubon and GreenerMiami and several others will pack the hall to make their case against moving the line for ANY reason.

From what I've heard some of commissioners have changed their "NO" votes to "YES" votes because of the ballpark. Whether it would have enough votes to pass I guess we'll have to wait and see.

The problem with Hialeah's request is the sheer size of it. Almost 800 acres. Were there a way to separate the stadium component from Codina's proposed development it might have a better chance, but it isn't going to play out that way.

Just to get a flavor of the opposition, I've added these links for those interested:

Actually it's 1140 acres now.

That's what happens when you don't read The Marlins Ballpark News. :mischief

Seriously though, if the commissioners actually do their homework they will find there is nothing enviromentally worth saving. There's a dump, a lake that is very contaminated, a trucking company and an unofficial dump on the site.

I went to the links Marlins2003 outlined. These "tree huggers" far out-do us as far as blind passion is concerned. Their "issue" in life is the environment. They make up their minds to back any issues they think threatens the environment without exceptions. They were mostly responsible for holding Bicentennial Park land off-limits for a ballpark a few years ago. They don't stop to think about public entertainment such as sports and the balance there needs to exist between not polluting the environment and a life with some pleasures. But noooooooo. "Hold the line", no matter what, is their motto. Hopefully the commissioners who plan to vote"yes" for the modification of the UDB have enough of what it takes to ignore the ranting and raving that will surely take place tomorrow.

Allowing this site to be developed according to the plan outline by County Manager Burgess would actually improve the environmental situation on the site because the mess created in the past there would be remedied as part of construction for the project.

It was a key point in the County Manager's Memo.

we should list the commish emial address on the site maybe a few emial spams form us may change there minds? Also anyone going to the UBD meeting maybe show up with marlin gear sign to show support

e mailed the frsit 6 so far will do the rest later good idea thou i also add the link so they can see Admin website and the many Marlins fans we have here

Increasing development in the everglades is never a good idea. It's funny. Dade county has all this room for condos and malls but nothing for a baseball stadium. If you look beyond the stadium I think you guys would agree that moving the UDB would be a bad move. You move it now, what prevents you from moving it 5-10 years in the future when the country grows even larger? I want the stadium built but not at the cost of losing natural widelife. If Cape is right, which he can be at times, then there would obviously be better ways at cleaning up the site than by putting a 400 million dollar stadium there, and I think that that will be a strong point in the opposition's case.

There is nothing worth saving enviromentally on the site. It's actually a toxic area right now.

I feel pessimistic about this.

It is not about wheter it is a toxic area or not. Is about power and politics. Logic is not allowed

Yeah, that's why I'm being cautious on this. The Hialeah idea could die as early as this week. :confused

The UDB hearing is over.

It turns out to be nothing more than an informational meeting of no consequence. Lasted less than an hour, no votes taken. No doubt more to come on this subject.

The hearings with votes start tomorrow.

Let's start off by saying the site was a dump, it is seperated from any other parts of the "Everglades" by the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike, it is currently used as cow pastures...in those areas clean enough, and what money is going to be available to cleanup the land other than the ballpark project? Codina only owns part of the land...and it was not to be included in the Application prior to the ballpark project.

No ballpark, no cleanup. The other landowners would have just filled enough to get approved and built.

If you think this land is Everglades, you better get in the car and drive up there.

so may be hialeah height will not be use and hialeah park can not be use too because it most likely become public park that can be touch it state law so only hope will down the pipe

Right now the indicators point towards Hialeah Heights being approved. Nothing is out yet at either Hialeah site.

Today is the day.

*dies*

If this is approved things should pick up quickly on the stadium front.

And what exactly are those indicators?

BTW, it appears because the mayor of Hialeah is in Tallahassee today, the HH initiative may not be heard until tomorrow, depending on what transpires today.

the mayor of Hialeah said he and the Marlins are focusing on that site
