Notice to America: buy cars with better MPG ratings.

That will save you money, but it will not make a dent in the demand.

Get rid of your big waste of space, dangerous, SUV. Buy small, conserve. Help the environment for crying out loud. Soon gas prices will be $5.00 P/G.

Transitioning to the yet-to-be determined Ethanol mix will. Flexcars have to continue being made.

Government has no profit margin.

Government has no profit margin.

Are you sure? I'm fairly certain that some state governments charge a percentage of each gallon, rather than a flat amount.

Are you sure? I'm fairly certain that some state governments charge a percentage of each gallon, rather than a flat amount. They do.....in Florida I believe it's about 30 cents (or at least that's what it was around the summertime last year) that are charged in taxes. So the price here would go from $2.95 to $2.65.....the oil companies are still posting obscene profits. Thing is that for Florida to lower the amount of taxes on gas it would have to do so at a small rate per gallon. Let's say they axe 10 cents per gallon to $2.85. That saves you all of $1.20 on a 12 gallon car. $4.80 a month if you fill up once a week is nice to have but it isn't bank breaking for the consumer and the amount the government would lose in a state that already has issues finding funds at the moment wouldn't work.

What could be done is lower taxes on gas and make up for it by charging more in tolls. Drop taxes on gas by 15 cents and raise tolls in the state by 25 cents; drivers would be more likely to either carpool or drive less that way.

It would help if OPEC stopped being a**holes, though.

There is a tax on gas right now that if eliminated, would instantly knock 40 cents off of the price of a gallon of gas.

If you really want to blame someone, blame the government for allowing the energy companies to write the nation's energy policy in secret. I should have known that it was going to come back to haunt us eventually. Companies were able to get all sorts of gifts from the government, like lowered environmental restrictions, and more importantly, government subsidies and rebates.

I'm also wondering why OPEC has been so quiet throughout all of this...

Because it's taking OPEC eternity to count their money.

Most likely.

Just imagine how high prices could go if there was a REAL shock in oil supply, like if we attack Iran? Then we're really screwed. $7-10 a gallon, anyone?

this is all just a result of the oil glut in the 1980s. prices have been a lot lower than they should have been because the market had been saturated, now it isn't so the actual price of oil is making itself known.

Ugh. It's just mind boggling to think about. In my mind the players in the oil industry are going to put themselves out of business, because the gouged gas prices are finally getting people interested in alternative energy sources.

Even if there is an interest in alternative energy, the costs of transitioning the entire country would be prohibitive, to say nothing of the time it would take, meaning consumers are going to feel the crunch, one way or another.

But he believes any breaching of the $100 level would be short-lived, and that prices would fall to between $30 and $60 as increased investment brings new production and refining capacity on stream in oil-producing nations.
