September 19, 200321 yr FROM FLORIDAMARLINS.com/MLB.com 09/18/2003 12:42 PM ET Marlins turn to Beckett in opener By Mike Gennaria / MLB.com After losing two leads to the Phillies on Thursday, including one via a Jim Thome home run in the eighth inning, the Marlins lost the game, 5-4. The defeat was the second in three games in Philadelphia and it allowed the Phillies to creep within a half-game of Florida for the lead in the National League Wild Card standings. The Marlins look to get back on the winning track when they start a crucial four-game series in Atlanta on Friday. Josh Beckett faces Cy Young candidate Russ Ortiz in the opener. Beckett faced the Braves in his last start and he put his team in position to notch a victory. He gave up three runs, all in the first inning, on eight hits and a walk in seven innings before departing with a 4-3 lead. But a ninth-inning bullpen meltdown let Atlanta escape with an 8-4 win. Beckett also struck out a season high 11 batters in that start. The 23-year-old has been impressive in his last six starts, posting a 3-1 record and a 2.11 ERA. Beckett is 2-3 despite a 1.91 ERA versus the Braves in his career. Ortiz takes his second shot at his 20th win, after he was shelled by Florida in his first attempt. The Marlins touched the Atlanta right-hander for seven runs in three innings en route to an 8-3 victory last week in Miami. While the Marlins battle the Braves, the Phillies host the Reds for a three-game set this weekend. Pitching matchup: FLA: RHP Josh Beckett 8-7, 3.02 ERA in 2003 2-0, 1.89 ERA vs. ATL in 2003 2-3, 1.91 ERA vs. ATL lifetime ATL: RHP Russ Ortiz 19-7, 4.08 ERA in 2003 2-2, 6.30 ERA vs. FLA in 2003 5-4, 3.62 ERA vs. FLA lifetime Player to watch: Juan Encarnacion is hitting .500 (5-for-10) with two doubles and two RBIs against Ortiz this season. Quotable: "I kept us in the game. I just wish I had two pitches back. The double to Lieberthal and the home run to Polanco. If I get the fly-out on Lieberthal, it's 3-1 instead of them getting two runs to tie the game." -- Pitcher Dontrelle Willis on his start Thursday in Philadelphia On the Internet: MLB.TV Gameday Audio Gameday On television: Marlins: PAX Braves: Turner South On radio: Marlins: Sports radio/WQAM 560 AM; WQBA 1140 AM (Spanish) Braves: WSB 750 AM Quick hits: Miguel Cabrera is hitting .400 (20-for-50) with two home runs, eight doubles and 14 RBIs in his last 13 games. ... The Marlins are 10-6 this season against the Phillies with next week's three-game series in Miami still remaining. ... Thursday's loss was only the team's second in their last 10 day games. ... Alex Gonzalez's throwing error in the eighth inning halted a franchise-best nine straight games without a miscue. ... Florida lost their first series after winning five straight. ... The annual rookie hazing took place on the team flight to Atlanta. Rookies Dontrelle Willis, Miguel Cabrera, Tommy Phelps, Kevin Olsen and Blaine Neal wore Hooters restaurant outfits on the team plane and the ride to the hotel. September 19, 200321 yr Gee...I wonder if Nate Bump also was in a Hooter's outfit? He's a rookie too! As usual, he's not mentioned. He's the "forgotten" guy on the team.
