May 28, 200620 yr Did anybody see that finish?! That was AWESOME! I haven't been that excited during a race in YEARS. Congrats to Sam Hornish, Jr, but man I gotta admit I was pulling for Marco or Michael Andretti.

The announcers were like fanboys for the sport...I found them really annoying. I don't get why I'm supposed to care about the Andrettis any more than the other drivers. There are so many things about this sport that I don't understand. Some guy hits a wall on Lap 190 or whatever...with minimal damage...he drives his ass off the track...so why is there a caution for the next 5 laps? Were they still cleaning up or something? How long can it possibly take? They should just not count the caution laps after, say, Lap 175. I find the whole thing ridiculous. Also, what's the story with blocking? That's a foul? I thought that's what you're supposed to do...not let the guy behind you get in front of you. What good is running out in front then? I'd rather be in second and just do what Hornish did.
May 29, 200620 yr That was an awesome race. Indy 500 truly is the biggest racing event in the world. (And that's coming from a big time Nascar fan) Rusty Wallace was pretty bad in the booth. He should stick to Nascar.

They had a caution for 5 laps because that particular caution was CAUSED by debris on the track. Track officials have to make sure that the track is free of debris and any oil or fluids put down. Especially when there's 5 laps to go and everybody knows there is going to be a race to the finish. Wouldn't it be crappy to see a race contender get taken out because they missed a spot of oil as a result of hurrying up the restart? Then again, what do the track officials know? :plain Blocking is a damn good way to kill somebody, especially in open wheel racing. It's not like NASCAR, you can't just bump and run the guy in front of you in the corner if you need to. Kanaan was clearly blocking excessively, endangering him, the guy trying to pass him, and anyone else running near them.
May 29, 200620 yr It seems like it would be really easy to pass, then. If you're going into the final two laps...would you rather be in first or second? Who's going to win most of the time?
May 29, 200620 yr Author It depends on a couple things. Obviously, who has the faster car? Other things factor in during those final laps too, mostly things that you'd expect (particularly the race leader - he's looking in his mirror, wondering how fast the #2 car is closing, rather than concentrating on hitting his marks... things like that)
May 29, 200620 yr Only 2 things could have made today's race better to watch....High Definition and a Danica Patrick win. When will Indy Motor Speedway Productions provide ABC an HD feed....or let ABC/ESPN actually produce the broadcast themselves? Such a nice race ruined by 1990s coverage...it is always a decade behind on TV than it should be. Kudos to ESPN and Dish Network for teaming up and creating the Indy 500 Interactive Screen today. I could watch 6 car cams on one screen with the Indy Radio Network feed on audio.

They were able to convince the Indy sponsors to do it. Indy car racing isnt nearly as lucrative as NASCAR racing. The ad buyers are throwing a lot more dime at the networks for their time.
May 29, 200620 yr If I were an advertiser I would prefer the side-to-side advertising because I think viewers are more likely to notice the ad. When they go to commercial, that means it's time to go take a piss or get a drink or change the channel for a minute. But with the side-to-side you can keep your eye on the ads and the racing. It's not something that will work with every sport, but racing is certainly one where it seems like a good idea.
