Student Suspended for Sharing Caffeine Gum

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. (AP) -- A middle school student was suspended for three days for sharing chewing gum because it contained caffeine, school officials said.

The girl, whose name and age were not released, gave another Huston Middle School student Jolt gum. The gum is "a stimulant that has no other redeeming quality," said Amy Palermo, schools superintendent.

Products acting as a stimulant are prohibited and possessing them is grounds for disciplinary action, and the suspension was mainly based on the girl's decision to share the gum, she said.

"What if the gum had been given to a student with a heart condition?" Palermo said Thursday.

The school has soda machines, but they aren't turned on during school hours and drinks containing caffeine aren't sold in the lunchroom.

Jolt is manufactured by GumRunners LLC of Hackensack, N.J., and is marketed as a caffeine-energy gum.

Stupid. You know damn well the girl that got suspended was saying "TRY SOME OF THIS JOLT GUM! IT'S GOT CAFFEINE!" so that point about the heart condition is moot.

3 days? Give me a break!

It was Jolt Gum, it said in the article.

As far as I know, Vault doesn't make gum.

I thought this was going to be that senior prank where those dudes went around and gave the whole teaching staff marijuana brownies.

Yeah, this is ridiculous. Suspension over gum. Little reactionary. Almost as much as having the superintendant shot for this ridiculous waste of time.

Dodge - indoctrinating children in a school near you!

This "zero tolerance" sh*t is going too far.

A few years ago, a girl was banned from attending her graduation. Her crime? She was helping her aunt move and she had a box of silverware in her car. A butter knife had fallen out and was on the floor in the back seat area. Somebody saw the knife, reported that there was a weapon and she was escorted off school grounds and suspended. Parents appealed. The superintendant sypathized but said that was the school policy against any weapons. Said the girl should just consider this as a disappointment in life. The school even had extra security to keep her out if she dared to attend graduation.

Back in my day, we used to have Ice Ball fights on the play ground and it was fun. Last year, my little brother got suspended for throwing a snowball at a friend.
