June 11, 200620 yr The last two starts, Josh Johnson has had to face off against Jason Schmidt (on top of his game) and the Giants. Three starts ago, he faced a tough Pedro Martinez and the Mets. JJ pitched great in all three of his games (7 innings pitched in each game), giving up earned runs (3) in only one game against the Giants on May 31, but still came out only 1-2. If everything plays out as scheduled, JJ will be facing John Smoltz and the Braves during his next start on Tuesday. Guess who he will probably be matched up against when we play the Toronto Blue Jays? You guessed it, Roy Halladay. I guess it is good our hottest pitcher is getting these matchups, but he isn't going to be able to slip much if he is going to have a chance at wins.

June 11, 200620 yr In a way...I like this. That leaves the 2nd starters and on for D-Train, Nolasco, and Scotty O, and everytime JJ faces a guy like that and does well, it's just a great big confidence booster. Not to mention he has the talent as well, as I have said IMO JJ is our next big game pitcher a'la Big Tex, and when we make the playoffs again he'd be the #1 guy in the playoff rotation. Some might not agree, but thats the way I'd like to see it.
June 11, 200620 yr I guess this has to do with JJ being our #1 pitcher in the rotation. Or our #5 pitcher facing other teams with the Marlins playing 1 game ahead of everyone else.

As far as confidence goes, with how he has performed so far in the tough games he has been in, I am sure he has a ton of it.
June 11, 200620 yr you gotta remember the other teams are thinking like this too, only they're saying we have to face Josh Johnson when pedro's pitching for ex. keep it up j.j.!!

I don't think not many knows who Johnson is. So it should be a nice surprise for them. True. JJ definitely has that advantage. But they are learning slowly. Here is what Schmidt said after his last game against the Marlins. Praising Johnson: Think Marlins pitcher Josh Johnson has seen enough of Schmidt, who beat the rookie in back-to-back starts? "I feel the same way,'' Schmidt said with a laugh. Schmidt said he was relieved to have outdueled Johnson in a 2-1 win Tuesday that ended with Schmidt striking out the side after the Marlins had put the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the ninth inning. "I don't think it would have been that kind of game if Johnson hadn't battled me so well. We both knew we didn't have any room to give up anything, and that's what happens in those kinds of games,'' he said. "He was awesome. For a young kid, he's got a great feel for pitching. Adds and subtracts with his fastball, uses his off-speed really well. He's going to be an exciting one to watch and he's going to surprise some people with some numbers at the end of the year.'' http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...notes_0608.html
June 12, 200620 yr This is a test for JJ. If he can keep up with all these big name pitchers it might boost his confidence. :thumbup .

By now every advance scout for any team the Marlins will be playing knows who Josh Johnson is and will follow every game he pitches. Don't kid yourself, just because we are being largely ignored by the local and national media that opponents aren't following our every game.
