Please keep submitting your questions. baseballmod: 2:49 pm Thank you for participating in today's chat. Please keep submitting your questions. The chat will begin in about 10 minutes. marlinsguest: 2:58 pm Thanks to everyone for joining me today. Feel free to ask me any questions you have. Alex_Carver: 2:59 pm What would you say is the biggest reason you've had so much success this season? marlinsguest: 3:00 pm I had a great offseason, and coming into spring I knew I would have to be competitive to win a job. I give a lot of credit to Rick Kranitz and Miguel Olivo for guiding me through this season and helping me along. skiberri: 3:01 pm hey josh, do u like having your own segment with logan kensing? marlinsguest: 3:02 pm Yea, it's a lot of fun hosting the presgame segment of FSN Florida. But, he does a lot of the work, so that makes it easier for me. I just kind of work off of him. Alex_Carver: 3:02 pm How big of an impact has Rick Kranitz had on your season? marlinsguest: 3:04 pm I think he's had a big impact... whether it's during the game your pitching, or even when you aren't. He always wants you to watch hitters, think about counts, think about where hitters are in the lineup. There's a lot more to pitching than just going out and throwing the ball. Alex_Carver: 3:05 pm If you had to use one word to sum up the first half, what word would that be and why? marlinsguest: 3:05 pm Fun. We played well and kind of over-exceeded expectations. Everybody in the clubhouse has been awesome. Base_Ball: 3:06 pm hi Josh! who's your favorite player to hang out with? marlinsguest: 3:06 pm Logan Kensing. We just have a lot in common. We're both from the Midwest, and this is my fourth season as his teammate (including the minors). Nathan_Gates: 3:07 pm Hey JJ this is Nathan Gates, I played Little League with you and against you in high school. First thing, congrats on the great season so far. What was the hardest thing to get used to in the Majors? marlinsguest: 3:08 pm Hey, what's up, Nate? The hardest thing to get used to is having to constantly make adjustments... whether it be to the hitters, umpires, whatever. skiberri: 3:09 pm What team did you root for growing up as a kid? marlinsguest: 3:09 pm Minnesota Twins. I was born in Minneapolis. Armando_Juarez: 3:09 pm What do you think about the way Alfredo Amezaga is playing? marlinsguest: 3:10 pm I love the way he plays. He's one of those little scrappy guys you hate to play against, but you love having him on your team. jenksliz: 3:11 pm Hey from Jenks (your favorite teacher)!!!! When's your next segment with Logan? marlinsguest: 3:11 pm Hey favorite teacher. We are scheduled to do another pregame show segment next week, when the team's in Atlanta. Base_Ball_3: 3:12 pm Hey Josh, do you feel more comfortable in the 'pen or starting? And why? marlinsguest: 3:13 pm Starting. I am one of those pitchers that needs to get into a groove. It's much easier to get into a groove when you are throwing more pitches. brookfish: 3:13 pm Who was your favorite player growing up? marlinsguest: 3:14 pm Ken Griffey Jr. and Kirby Puckett. brookfish: 3:14 pm When you were younger did you always dominate the competition? marlinsguest: 3:15 pm Yes, but I used to also be able to hit the ball when I was younger. brookfish: 3:15 pm Who is the most intimidating batter you have faced this year? marlinsguest: 3:16 pm I haven't really been intimidated by anyone, but it was cool facing Barry Bonds. I got him out all three times I faced him, and that was cool. shibe55: 3:16 pm When you were in high school did you think you were going to the Majors? marlinsguest: 3:17 pm It was always my dream and my high school coach said I had what it took to be a Major Leaguer. Base_Ball_3: 3:17 pm What advice would you give to a little leaguer, who wants to someday play ball in the big league marlinsguest: 3:18 pm Always work hard. Never give up. Do the right thing when nobody's looking. heat03: 3:18 pm How did it feel when you got your first Major League hit? marlinsguest: 3:19 pm It was really cool, it happened last season. I ended up scoring. heat03: 3:19 pm Other than Logan, who are you good pals with on the Marlins? marlinsguest: 3:20 pm Randy Messenger, Scott Olsen, Jeremy Hermida... those are the guys I spend the most time with. Kurtis_Eaton: 3:20 pm JJ- whats your favorite memory from playing in high school? marlinsguest: 3:21 pm Playing with Kurtis Eagon. txfish: 3:22 pm What is your go to pitch when you are in trouble? marlinsguest: 3:22 pm My slider. It's my out-pitch, so when I need something big I go to that. brookfish: 3:22 pm Have you always been a pitcher? marlinsguest: 3:23 pm I didn't pitch until high school. They asked me if I wanted to throw one game of a doubleheader, and that was when I got my start. txfish: 3:23 pm Who do you look up to as a player and still get star struck when you take the field against them? marlinsguest: 3:24 pm Roger Clemens and Jason Schmidt. skiberri: 3:24 pm can you tell me what your favorite hobby is? marlinsguest: 3:24 pm Golf and video games. heat03: 3:25 pm I have grown up in Florida all my life, and thats why when I grow up I want to play for the Marlins. Did you dream of playing for the Twins when you grew up? marlinsguest: 3:25 pm Yes. I was at the 1987 World Series parade, and I'll never forget that. It was sweet. shibe55: 3:26 pm What was it like playing in the Minors? marlinsguest: 3:26 pm It was tough. The travel and everything is difficult and hectic. But, I had a lot of fun. marlinsguest: 3:27 pm Ok, two more questions then I have to hit the field. limpy2591: 3:27 pm do you think you have a shot at rookie of the year? marlinsguest: 3:28 pm There are a lot of great rookies this season, many of whom are on my team. I try not to think about those kinds of things. I have to take the mound every five days and just focus on getting hitters out and winning games. Base_Ball_3: 3:28 pm You always seem so calm and composed on the mound. Do you ever feel nervous? marlinsguest: 3:29 pm No. As soon as the game starts, I'm in the comfort zone. marlinsguest: 3:29 pm Thank you all for coming online and chatting today. I hope to see you all at the ballpark soon. Alex_Carver is me.

I got him out all three times I faced him, and that was cool. No doubt about that. This cool and calm mindset that he brings to the mound is one of those qualities that no stat can quantify but has been essential in him being able to get out of tough situations in which almost every other pitcher on our starting rotation has folded when put to the test.
July 18, 200619 yr 2:59 pm What would you say is the biggest reason you've had so much success this season? marlinsguest: 3:00 pm I had a great offseason, and coming into spring I knew I would have to be competitive to win a job. I give a lot of credit to Rick Kranitz and Miguel Olivo for guiding me through this season and helping me along. I guess this takes away alot of the questions about Olivo being poor at calling games. Hmmm lets see, he throws out 40 % of would be base stealers and the guy with one of the best ERAs in MLB credits him for guiding him through the season and yet some (one person, really) still calls him out because of his "poor" defense ?? :thumbdown
