July 19, 200619 yr Reggie: .216 BA, .624 OPS, 11 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR in 218 at bats Gathright: .207 BA, .582 OPS, 8 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR in 208 at bats Gathright is garbage...not saying Reggie isnt, but he is not an upgrade in any way, shape, or form. Does Gathright even have as strong an arm as JP? And despite what you think, Gathright is not a good defensive OF. Gathright is not a good baseball player. He has no buisness in MLB. Not saying Reggie does, but they are the same age, same skill level, and having Gathright over Abercrombie would have no effect in the win column. Both of them are pretty much terrible, it's just Abercrombie has been less terrible. Little weak Gathright has just as many RBI as Reggie despite the slugging differance. Gathright also has more runs scored. the AB are relatively equal. Sure, the OPS says Reggie is better. But there is a huge problem with that. Gathright simply does not slug, creating a huge advantage of TB over him. What's important is: OBP Gathright - .329 Reggie - .280 Fifty points. FIFTY!!!! Reggie isn't Francoer and rocking baseball's faces off to account for the awful OBP. If Reggie wanted to be considered a better player then Gathright, he needs to hit the ball to take advantage of his drastic slugging increase over Gathright and stop whiffing nonstop. Looking at their professional track record, it's safe to say Reggie will probably never hit, while it's reasonable to believe Gathright's average will go up (somewhat. He ain't a .207 hitter. I could see a consistent .240. Again not good, but still.) and his plate discipline with the BB is not a fluke. Gathright is just flat out better. Also, defensively RF ((PO + A) divided by innings) Gathright - 3.16 (2nd in baseball) Reggie - 2.73 (10th) Joey doesn't make stupid errors, gets to a lot of balls because of his speed, and is more then adequete in the field. You really need to get over the fact that just because you don't have a cannon arm, doesn't make you a bad outfielder. I'd rather have an OF that doesn't let singles by Brad Ausmus go right through his leg where the catcher is able to run to third base. But that's just me. Gathright might not be a good starter because he can't slug worth anything and his OBP is really plain at the moment, but a .330 OBP, very speedy for base running, and solid defender in all three OF spots has a place on MLB teams rosters as a quality 4th/5th OF. Nothing wrong with that. Reggie is simply not a bench calibre player. He doesn't get on base. He can't field despite his tools. His power is to random to take advantage of in situations. He's flat out useless. I agree that our W/L column would not be greatly effected by having one over the other because both are simply not very good baseball players right now, but you're nuts if you take Reggie over him. Gathright has easily outproduced Abercrombie this season, and has a far greater chance of adjusting and having a nice little niche career. I was wrong about Gathright. I thought he was going to hit atleast .270 (making his OBP around the .380 mark looking at his BB totals), but alas. He can't hit for crap. It's really saying something when a guy is hitting .207, and is better then our predominant CF starter. KC would not give us Gathright 1-1 for Abercrombie. I think that's a pretty good indication of whose more valuable. You can think of it that way too.
July 19, 200619 yr Just want to give some props to Willingham and Reggie for their continuous stellar play in the outfield. I cant help but have thoughts of Willie Mays when I see the way Reggie navigates the OF and Willingham basically locked himself into a Gold Glove tonite. I apologize to Deep Fried Fish and Felo.......you guys are right. The rest of this team is bringing Reggie down. If he was surrounded by some real Major Leaguers he would surely be making a run at the Triple Crown this year. My bad. lmao.......sadly i am laughing

I will refer to this post in future Reggie is God threads.
July 19, 200619 yr It wasn't the wetness of the ball, Abercrombie didn't set himself properly for the throw. He was in mid-hop while throwing.
July 19, 200619 yr Reggie misplayed a ball in the outfield, scored only on an error-fest, and overthrew the cutoff man twice. I didn't get either the IBB or the Bunt from Girardi. The bunt bothered me even more, because that took the bat out of the hands of our 2 best hitters. Jacobs got himself out just as a bonus.
July 19, 200619 yr Or Uggla bunting...not sure if I got that. I never understand taking the bat out of a hitters hands. It's not like he will be running it out for a hit like Castillo or JP. Bunts were a big part of their game. I would hope he was doing it on his own rather than thinking it was a called bunt. I can see Reggie doing it more often and not because of the Keystone Kops play that enabled him to score. The guy outright flies down that base line. I saw 3 plays (different games) that IMO were rushed and turned into errors because of his speed on just this homestand. And he is becoming pretty good on the basepaths. Not the steal type player because he has yet to learn how to read a pitcher well enough for that. Just heads up base running.
