Heroes

Masi Oka (Hiro) is going to be on Studio 60 following Heroes as well today.

Can there be a more blatant attempt of NBC trying to prop up a failing show by sending a successful show's most popular character over to boost ratings?

Don't sully Hiro with having to be on Studio 60!

*shakes head*

this weeks heroes was pretty lagging until the very end of the show when we saw two things.

1. hiro meets his daddy, who apparently took him and andro. why exactly? we'll probably find out next week.

2. claire meets her mom (who apparently is a pyromaniac, aka can start fires like volcana). i think the mom being a fire starter made sense with the fire. something must have been up, as both of them were said to have died in the fire. and next week, her dad comes in. this should be interesting. could she have been getting rid of her husband? and looks like next week won't be for the faint at heart, with claire cutting her wrist with a chopping knife next week in the previews.

a big weakness i can see in the show already, it relies a bit too much on shock endings to build up the bland rest of the story, and you can lose viewers mid show, unlike 24 where you are unlikely to lose viewers in the middle of an hour. i would like to see more substance in the middle of the show, even though it's still good. it made the last two shows somewhat mediocre in that sense.

still not much about jessica and the connection to the rest of the heroes. the only thing i saw was the symbol on her back, which was also on the samurai's sword. i think somehow, she will control jessica or something like that, but i still need the saunders connected to the rest of the heroes in some way. it better happen soon, otherwise nikki saunders is this show's kim bauer (useless and annoying and source of extra drama). also, looks like micah's powers are control over electronic devices, like some mechanic overlord or something.

sylar only faked his death and is back on the loose...looks like my theory of two peters could still come to fruition.

not too much on peter this week, expect he finds the invisible man can help control others powers, and his brother and the indian are chasing him again. i would like to see what part nathan eventually plays in all of this.

i hope this show doesn't drag on and on like lost, because that's a good way to lose viewers. i'm hoping alot of the mysteries are solved this season, and have new mysteries arise next season, but i'm okay if a couple of big ones stay unanswered for a while.

and the big question i've been wondering, who is the star of the show? i argue either hiro or claire at this point, but i think nathan will be a central character later on.

It's a true ensemble cast, there isn't one main character. If there was, it'd definitely be Hiro if only because he's connected to just about everyone.

The pacing of this show is completely different from Lost. Every episode of Heroes has multiple things happen to every character, with each character moving on a linear path towards something. Peter has his goal, Claire hers, Hiro his, et cetera et cetera. My problems with Lost are that the characters often seem aimless and that the writers drench each episode with excessive backstory, which detracts tremendously from the actual plotline. Too much backstory is the halmark of a weak and timid writer, as Stephen King said.

thanks for explaining the lost thing. i like backstory, but it seems like lost is going nowhere based on what i've read on message boards. but this isn't the lost thread.

anyway, i just thought about this about an hour ago, but clare "died" 14 years ago in a fire. in order for her to survive that fire, one of two things happened. either she had the healing ability locked in from 18 months old in order to survive the fire, or someone interfered (parents, mr. bennett, haitian, etc) to take her out of there.

we have a logic problem, especially if #1 is true. matt said that he didn't have any psychic powers before he saw the haitian, and the same thing happened to the burn man, which infers that mr. bennett and company gave at least some of these people powers they didn't have before. but this happened about six months ago, which would be way after clare's supposed death in the fire. does this mean they just had the power dormant this whole time? how do their powers work, are they imprinted early to use in life and death situations, or do they emerge slowly through time? are they given by someone or are they naturally there by passage of traits? this presents alot of questions by clare's "death" in the fire as a baby. if #2 is true, we have to wonder how long mr. bennett and company have been meddling around in this type of stuff. i'm thinking it's the former for clare.

and also, i would like to know if sylar is after clare for something else besides her powers. perhaps, but not likely.

Everyone's assuming Mr. Bennett isn't Claire's dad. :mischief

just thought of something else....what if sylar is claire's dad? maybe that's why he's after her and mad at mr. bennett.

here's the list of possible fathers: (this could turn into maury fast, but the mother knows the father already, so it's not really)

mr. bennett (currently claire's adopted father), ramifications, i think everyone is aware of that by now.

sylar (after claire, presumably for her powers), could be a second motive behind finding claire

nathan peterelli (big businessman), i don't know what kind of canned worms this will open, but this could further connect peter and claire, as they would be uncle and niece. also would blow a door on nathan's marriage.

it's highly unlikely the father is going to be a new character, based on the previews. it's someone we're familiar with, and i can't think of any fathers outside of those three. but likely, it's someone with powers of their own.

i'm thinking sylar.

Here's my theory on the "early life of Claire" and the nature of the Hero's power:

Before starting, I will say that I consider there to be 3 stages to the evolution of each Hero's power.

1) Latent Stage - this is the period of time before the Hero knows he/she has power because the ability has yet to manifest itself.

2) Passive Stage - this is the period of time after the power has manifested itself but before control is achieved. He or she might not be aware of it in the early parts of the stage, but it's during this time when discovery and rudamentary control begins.

3) Active Stage - the period of time when the Hero is aware of the ability and is able to control it.

My assumption is Mr. Bennett has one power which manifests itself into 3 abilities. The power is: control over others' power. The abilities are: 1) The ability to inhibit or allow someone else to use their power 2) The ability to activate another's power by moving it from the Latent Stage to the Passive Stage of development. 3) The ability to teach another how to control their own power, thus bringing it to the Active Stage.

To support this, someone or something is able to prevent other people from tapping into their ability while Bennett's around. It's either him or the Haitian. Doubtful that the Haitian is doing it because his is the ability to control memory, and aside from Sylar and Peter, who can absorb others' powers, no one has more than one power. That leaves only Bennett. Also, we know Isaac can control his power now, and though we don't know how it happened, we know where it happened: while he was with Bennett in Odessa. Remember Bennett claimed to have taught Eden control, too. Also think about his controlling personality -- how he's willing to bend heaven and earth in order for the world to be as he wants it. How many people's memory did he order erased in order to prevent Claire from asking questions about her origins?

Continuing with Claire, her adopted father and biological father are indeed the same person, Mr. Bennett. Perhaps before he became director of the underground Heroes-agency disguised as a paper company, he was married to Claire's real mother. Claire's mother (CM) obviously knows how to control her pyrokinesis now, because we saw her using it to light a cigarette without any trouble. It is reasonable to assume, though, that when the fire occurred she didn't possess control.

I'm going to assume that during this period of time Bennett's own power was in its Passive Stage and so was CM's (maybe they were aware of the powers and maybe they weren't). She couldn't actively control her power, but neither could he. If he was in his active stage at that time, Bennett would have been able to teach her control (which she didn't have). While he was around, either knowingly or unknowingly, he was able to keep CM's power in check. One day, though, he wasn't there and baby Claire was alone with her mom. Being in her Passive Stage, she was unable to control her pyrokinesis and the house goes up in flames.

Because of Bennett's ability to activate powers from the Latent Stage to the Passive Stage, he was able to bring little baby Claire into the Passive Stage too (again either knowingly or unknowingly). When the blaze broke out she was safely protected by her power.

His controlling instincts guide Bennett to take Claire away and become way over-protective of her. The End.

We'll see whether this pans out, but it's a fun theory nonetheless.
