DHL Presents: Hometown Heroes

Featured Replies

Alright folks...

I am sure we have all heard about this amazing program that MLB is doing currently. We are going to decide on this board who is the hometown hero for all 30 MLB teams.

I'd love for some amazing discussion on all of the teams in this great game of baseball. If you dont see your team today, dont worry, it will be up eventually. But please, give your input, this series of debates can be exactly what you make them, so make it awesome.

So without further ado...

The Arizona Diamondbacks Hometown Hero Nominees:

Jay Bell

Luis Gonzalez

Randy Johnson

Todd Stottlemyre

Matt Williams

Make your choice, but also explain your reasoning, this should be fun, lets make it fun. Try to keep it serious and put some meat behind your selections, this is meant to be a fun debate, so let's make it one.

Luis Gonzalez

The guy led the Diamondbacks in OPS for 5 of their first 6 years - and that's only because he didn't play for them their inaugural season. He?s made 5 ASG appearances, won a Silver Slugger Award and ? oh yeah ? won them their World Series with a bloop single off of future HOFer Mariano Rivera.

RJ is a Mariner for life. Williams is a Giant. Bell is a Pirate. Stottlemyre? He never won TEN games as a DBack!

This one is Gonzo's easily.

Luis Gonzalez even if I'm not sure if he did it cleanly. Since I don't have any proof, you can't go against those numbers not to mention the fact he had a walk-off single in Game 7 off the World Series.

RJ...four cy youngs, 103 wins, 1832 Ks, and a perfect game in just six seasons...he also won World Series MVP (should have been sole MVP) and was the winning pitcher in 3 of their four wins

I would have done the hometown heroes differently

First of all, I would have limited it to the original 16 teams...if you look at the guys on the list on the other 14, it's kinda ridiculous

Secondly, it should be people should have only been allowed to vote for one team only...for one, they call it hometown heroes, so you should only be allowed to vote for your hometown hero, as why should a fan of a team's vote count the same as someone who isn't a fan of that team? Also, There willbe people who will vote for someone on another team will vote for someone who played for their team (i.e. I bet most Giants fans will vote for Robb Nen for the Marlins)

Thirdly, it should be expanded to 10 per team, so someone like Christy Mathewson, arguably the greatest pitcher of all time, doesn't get excluded

Its not as clear cut as some think.

I think it is clearly between Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzalez though.

You can definitely understand the inclusion of Jay Bell and Matt Williams, both living in the area and being the original faces of the club along with Todd Stottlemyre. Its difficult to do this with the last 4 teams to enter the league, but it is what it is.

I have to give it the Unit. Simply because of how absolutely dominating he was with them, especially in that World Series year, he teamed with Schilling, but you knew who the top horse was.
