Los Angeles, CA (Tuesday, December 18, 2007) Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson; Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM); Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of New Line Cinema have jointly announced today that they have entered into the following series of agreements:

 

* MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, "The Hobbit" and a sequel to "The Hobbit." New Line will distribute in North America and MGM will distribute internationally.

 

* Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two films based on "The Hobbit." New Line will manage the production of the films, which will be shot simultaneously.

 

* Peter Jackson and New Line have settled all litigation relating to the "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) Trilogy.

 

Said Peter Jackson, "I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. 'The Lord of the Rings' is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey."

What will be awesome one day is perhaps adapting 'The Silmarillion,' which is probably the most impressive literary work that he's done IMO.

Yes, and it isn't even a direct prequel to the trilogy. I just really hope they don't go with an original storied film.

I think that's impossible because I'm pretty sure the major issue beforehand was getting permission from Chris Tolkien to go through with the project. I am positive Tolkien's son wouldn't let them deviate at all.

I would think they're splitting the book into 2 movies, although the "sequel" term does make me wonder. Because like Lefty said, there's no book that takes place between Hobbit and LOTR from what I understand. I guess they could piece together some stories... probably wouldn't be centered around the hobbits though.

 

There's plenty of other material to draw on that wasn't in 'Hobbit' but found in other works. The appendices of Lord of the Rings contain a ton of info. But I don't see how you could lump all the "other stuff" together to make a second film. Not enough of it is related. I think you take as much of the "other stuff" and integrate it into The Hobbit, enough for two films.

 

For example at one point in 'Hobbit', Gandalf leaves the party and doesn't return until close to the end. Since the story is told mostly from Bilbo's perspective the book only briefly mentions where Gandalf was, but there's a lot of story there that involves the Necromancer.
