MIAMI (Ticker) -- The San Francisco Giants have seen what can

happen when they shut down Juan Pierre. They also have seen

what can happen when they don't.

In front of an expected capacity crowd at Pro Player Stadium,

the Giants will try to stop Pierre as they face the Florida

Marlins in Game Three of the National League Division Series.

In Game One, behind Jason Schmidt's overpowering stuff, the

Giants kept the speedy center fielder off the bases. Pierre was

hitless in four at-bats with a strikeout as his teammates

managed just three hits against Schmidt.

But Wednesday was a different story for Pierre, whose 65 stolen

bases led the major leagues. Sparked by Pierre, Florida tied

the series with a 9-5 victory.

Pierre had four hits, including a wind-blown two-run double into

the right field corner that snapped a sixth-inning tie. He

also singled and scored in the first, fifth and eighth innings.

But his biggest hit was in the fifth when Pierre pulled a long

fly ball into the corner that bounced high off the warning track

and off the wall. The ball fell when Jose Cruz Jr. got his

cleats caught on the warning track.

Pierre and second baseman Luis Castillo were a combined 0-for-8

in Game One but improved to 5-for-10 on Wednesday, helping the

Marlins rally from a 4-1 deficit.

"I think they were confident that they were going to get us

again," Pierre said. "But then we got guys on, guys moving

around, beating them with hits, singles and doubles, do what we

do, put the pressure on them."

Asked about the difference in Pierre's performances, Marlins

manager Jack McKeon said, "Well I think you saw that

(Wednesday). You know, the first two guys are our catalyst

really. They get on and cause havoc with the pitcher, there's

no question about it.

"You see, look at the boxscores. See when Castillo or Juan

Pierre get on two or three time during the day, we're going to

score some runs. If they don't get on, we're in trouble."

In addition to Pierre's four hits, the Marlins also got a solo

homer from Juan Encarnacion and run-scoring singles from Ivan

Rodriguez and Derrek Lee.

While Giants manager Felipe Alou admitted keeping Pierre off the

bases will be difficult, he is hopeful that his defense can at

least keep his running in check.

"It would be great to keep him off base, but it is going to be a

very difficult task to do," Alou said. "He's a guy that got

over 200 hits. He hits to all fields. ... He's going to get on.

He's going to get his hits. We just have to control his

running."

Cruz's inability to come up with Pierre's fly ball was just one

in a series of defensive mishaps by the usually sure-handed

Giants, who committed two errors but also misplayed at least

three balls.

Friday's game is expected to draw close to 60,000 fans. The two

games in Florida could bring some 120,000 fans to Pro Player,

where the Marlins were 53-28 this season.

"I think they're our 10th man, really," McKeon said. "When you

look at it, they've been tremendous here. Every time we've had a

big crowd here, we've played extremely well, hit the ball well

and had an exciting game.

"I think we've had two or three comeback wins. But they're

energized, they're loud. They kind of spur the players on."

Lefthander Kirk Rueter (10-5, 4.53 ERA) gets the assignment of

keeping Pierre in check. Pierre, who is 8-for-21 lifetime

against Rueter, hit .318 and stole 38 bases at home this season.

Rueter ended the regular season by winning his last three

decisions after going over three months without a victory. In

five September starts, he was 3-0 with a 3.67 ERA.

Rueter, who has been a Giant since July 30, 1996, is 1-1 in five

career postseason starts. One of those was a 2-1 loss in Game

One of the 1997 Division Series against Florida, when he allowed

one run and four hits in seven innings and did not get a

decision.

The 32-year-old Rueter is 4-6 with a 5.77 ERA in 15 career

starts vs. Florida, including a 3-3 mark at Pro Player Stadium.

He last faced Florida on August 24 at Pacific Bell Park, where

he allowed five runs and six hits in five innings of a 7-4 loss.

Mark Redman (14-9, 3.59), who completed his first season in the

National League, makes his postseason debut for the Marlins.

Acquired from the Detroit Tigers on January 13, 2002, he was one

of three 14-game winners for Florida, tying him for the team

lead.

Redman, who owned a 23-30 career record before joining the

Marlins, won his last three decisions this season, all on the

road.

The lefthander was 6-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 14 home starts this

season. He is facing the Giants and Barry Bonds for the first

time.

Game Four is Saturday.
