No, but the only reason he signed with the Cubs is they promised him the leadoff spot and that he'd only play 1 outfield position, which will be CF unless they find somebody to take Jacque Jones (which they won't) or if they are dumb enough to trade Matt Murton (which they aren't).

 

There were I believe 136 million other reasons why he "choose" the Cubs. Next we're going to hear that he gave them the Charles Johnson hometown discount. The Cubs are morons and will regret this decision before the contract is 2 years over.

 

Pie apparently took a somewhat significant step backwards. I'm not a minor league guru by any means but i'm under the strong impression that his offensive numbers regressed. Maybe a good time to try and rape the Cubs....again.

Just remember, Hanley Ramirez didn't have the most stellar campaign in Double A the year before we got him. Sometimes guys have the talent but aren't neccesarily lighting the minor league world on fire. That doesn't mean that they can't be ML ballplayers.

 

For the record, the Cubs were going to call up Pie a year and a half ago but he had a bone bruise on his shin. Matt Murton and Adam Greenburg were called up instead.

he started the year slow battling some injuries then got stronger towards the end of the year check out the splits

In 2005 Pie was ranked 31 in the top 100 prospect list.

 

Petit was ranked 46.

 

In 2006 Pie moved up a few slots and Petit lost 20 spots.

 

So they WERE about on the same plane for a while.

I like Nolasco for our rotation, but even if we did offer him it would be too little, I remember we tried getting Pie from them when we gave them Pierre, they didn't bite then, they may be desperate for pitching, but like most here know, they will be ready to deal only for a Sanchez or even Olsen. They'd take Dontrelle back in a heart beat, but I am not in favor of dealing our number one starter.

As has been said, it all depends on how bad they need pitching. With how much money they've already committed to A. Ramirez & Soriano, I can't imagine they'll be huge on the FA market for pitchers, but who knows? For all we know they'll pick up Zito and someone else to find a way to outspend the Yankees. There are other options. But if they have no place to play Pie and they end up desperate for pitching, I think there's a chance - but we have to wait and see.

At the time it didn't seem like such a bad deal. Hee Seop Choi was high on my list of prospects. He was a power hitting first basemen with a great on base percentage, and very young, he had all the makings of a star hitter. Can never compare to a slick fielding first basemen with a great bat, but we all knew that Derreks many LONG fly balls would translate itself into a HR in the more hitter friendly Wrigley field, but that was just ONE GREAT season after the Marlins traded him. He has been hurt ever since then, and I don't think it's fair to judge this trade just yet, yes we got nothing back, but that's the risk you take when you trade off an established baseball player for hype, as for Derrek, we'll see how Lee bounces back, and most indications point to him having a great season, but you never know what happens in baseball.

I understand the deal and I'm not critical of it jsut becuase of the results, but Hee Seop Choi is out of baseball so I think we can pretty much give that one to the Cubs even if Lee never plays again.
