December 4, 200619 yr Because I figured some of you might be interested... Reggie Abercrombie, who's playing for the Carolina Gigantes of the Puerto Rican Winter League, made news the other day by having two triples in one game. He leads the league in that category (triples) and in runs scored, and he's in the top 5 in home runs and stolen bases. On the other hand, he's also tied for third in strikeouts, and his average is a measly .222. Take the good with the bad, I suppose. You can check out his and everyone else's current stats by downloading this PDF file (the document is in both Spanish and English, and the charts are pretty standard, so it shouldn't be a problem). You may recognize a few other of the names in those lists -- like current Marlins minor leaguers Gaby Hern?ndez, Angel Molina, Nic Ungs -- as well as some old favorites like Benito Santiago and Juan Gonz?lez. If you'd like, you may check http://www.hitboricua.com/ every now and then for updates. BTW, to those un-familiar with the Winter Leagues, keep in mind that the level of play is nowhere near that of MLB. Cheers!
December 4, 200619 yr I'll take any improvement for Reggie. I'm not sure that he'll ever hit for a decent average or high OBP, but I think he can offset it a little if he can bring up his slugging by consistently hitting for power. At the very least he could (and should) potentially be better than low-avg & obp guys like Cody & Borchard. Hopefully at least in the absence of any new CF candidates, at least him & Amezaga are doing relatively well where they are. How are Reggie's splits? Because if he's mashing LHP, him & Amezaga platooning (instead of splitting the season) may end up our best option if we don't find a better outside option.

December 4, 200619 yr Are we actually thinking Reggie Abercrombie will be with this club come opening day? I shudder at the thought.

December 4, 200619 yr Are we actually thinking Reggie Abercrombie will be with this club come opening day? I shudder at the thought. He could easily be better than Cody. Both hit for low avg & OBP, but while Reggie slugged a lot less last season, I hope we can all realize that he is probably a good bit stronger too. I would still prefer to get someone from outside to play CF, but we haven't obtained anyone yet, and the market isn't getting any easier.
December 4, 200619 yr Geez, the guy is striking out a rate of one out of every four at bats, 16 out of 72 ABs with only 2 walks, has a .222 average to go with a .260 OBP. In the more than three years I've been here I've tried not to bash ballplayers but this is just awful and doesn't belong anywhere near the major leagues. He's regressing. At least Cody is capable of making contact, I don;t know how you could equate the two,and it's isn't like Abercrombie is even a MLB level outfielder. The sooner we sever our relationship with him the better. If there was no place Chris Aguila who was no Jim Edmonds, it's impossible think we would waste a roster on Reggie again. Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice shame on me.

In a month when we're likely very much the same team sorting through the January cast offs, he probably comes in as the 5th outfielder...Not something I want, just something I think is more likely than not to happen.

Not a significant difference IMHO, and if Reggie could put it together (a huge if, and very unlikely, I'll agree) he would actually be pretty good. At least enough to be a backup CF when your alternative is Eric Reed.
