According to sources, right-hander Octavio Dotel has turned down an offer from the Red Sox to accept a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $5 million from the Kansas City Royals. Dotel?s deal also is believed to include as much as $2 million in incentives that could bring the deal to $7 million. Red Sox officials made an offer to Dotel earlier today before leaving the winter meetings. The club had refrained from making an offer until seeing Dotel pitch in a winter league game in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday night, at which point Sox officials came away impressed. With Dotel out of the running, the Sox will almost certainly continue examining the possibility of right-hander Eric Gagne. Indications thus far are that Gagne is seeking a deal worth in excess of a guaranteed $5 million annually despite have pitched just 15-1/3 innings over the last two years.
