It's currently on limited release, but I was lucky enough to catch a screening of it the other day in NYC. Great flick. It's very talky, and somewhat slow at times but it's really a treat if you like thinking movies. You'll definitely want to go with someone who you can talk about it with afterwards.

The rotoscoping really fits well in the world PKD created.

9/10

It goes wide next week I believe. I would post this in the movie review thread, but I decided since it hasn't been released wide yet I'd just make a new thread.

Yeah, I've heard both bad and good things. It's one of those movies that you'll either love or hate.

I want to see it simply because of the "look" and Robert Downey, Jr. Keanu always makes me nervous when he isn't Neo, but this should be a pretty interesting movie.

I was down on this film because the initial reviews of it I heard months ago were downright horrid. I think those have lightened up a bit and I watched the first 24 minutes of the film that they have on IGN.

I'm definitely going to see this movie now. I'm a big Robert Downey Jr. guy (one of the most talented people in Hollywood as far as I'm concerned) and after seeing the first quarter of the film the rotoscoping animation is much more of a plus then a distracting detriment like I thought it would be.

Being based around drug trade, use, and enforcement intrigues me alot and it is a subject matter that hits home for me because of personal reasons.

It's only playing at a little art house theatre locally I'll wait for the wider release and catch it on my favorite theatre.

I just got back from this. I definitely enjoyed it. The rotoscoping was a little distracting at first, as I was trying to figure out just who the hell everyone was, but after about 10 minutes it wasn't really an issue...and I think it added to the film. Besides all the cartoony type effects they were able to do, just the look of it kind of added to the atmosphere of paranoia that pervades the entire movie.

It was a little slow at times, and, yes, a little talky...but those scenes were usually funny...just a little long. Robert Downey gave a great performance that helped energize some of those talky moments. Woody Harrelson, on the other hand, actually came off like a cartoon. I usually like him, but there was something a little off about his performance in this one. Also, I thought Winona Ryder looked hotter as a cartoon than she ever has in real life, which I find disturbing on a personal level, but whatever.

I'm not really sure what the greater message was in this besides drugs are bad and will mess with your brain, but it was an enjoyable ride either way.

As a big fan of Waking Life, I was wondering if anyone saw Scanner? I might purchse the DVD after work. I'm intrigued by the source material (based on an almost autobiographical work by Phillip K. Dick) and the plot. The fact that they used that cool cel-shading over the actors to give it a distinct look, as well as Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson are in it just adds to it's potential value in my eyes...

So, any opinions?

I would recommend this movie. It was very nice to see a different style of filmmaking like this. In addition, most of Philip K. Dick's stories make for very thought-provoking reading/watching. This story was no different, and they put the epilogue from the book at the end of the film, where the author listed many people he knew (including himself) that had been either killed or severely damaged by drug abuse.

I watched it and thought it was very good, one of my favorite movies of the year. The way it's shown actually makes it better in my opinion, I don't think it would have worked like that in real life.

I never got to see the full thing, but I bought the DVD yesterday.

It's about as bare bones as any DVD that's been released in the past 2-3 years. The packaging is really disappointing and it didn't even have a paper insert. I'm looking forward to watching the rest though, and the commentary track seems promising.
