Posted February 21, 200718 yr Dolphins, Holliday reach 4-year, $20 million dealBY ARMANDO SALGUERO asalguero@MiamiHerald.com Defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday has agreed to a four-year, $20 million deal with the Dolphins, which prevents the team's most valuable potential free agent from hitting the market when it opens March 2. Holliday, 31, is expected to sign the contract later today. The deal, which pays Holliday $7 million in the first year, puts Holliday among the top 10-paid defensive tackles in the NFL. ''They made him a priority and we're very happy they did,'' said Cary Fabrikant, who, along with local agent Brian Levy, represents Holliday. ``Vonnie is extremely happy to be with the Dolphins for the next four years.'' Holliday, who is expected to speak with the media on a conference call later today, was Miami's second-best pass-rusher last season behind Jason Taylor. He had seven sacks among his 66 tackles. Holliday would have been the most valuable Miami player scheduled to hit free agency and was clearly the team's priority since the end of the season. Although there were no talks between the Dolphins and Holliday's agents in the weeks immediately following the regular season, talks heated up in the past week. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There goes alot of cap room. The dolphins need to sign about 15 players this offseason and they just spent 7 million of this years cap on him.
February 22, 200718 yr Salary caps dont necessarily work that way... I know it says 7 million dollars are paid to him this year, but the salary cap is waaaay more complicated than Madden football games make it seem. I am definitely leaving room for this being a dumb reply... I could be very wrong about this.

Vonnie had a huge season last year.

I am definitely leaving room for this being a dumb reply... I could be very wrong about this. When it says 7 million in year one it means 7 million in year one. The reason he probably resigned with the dolphins is because he will get the 7 million this year, which means 35% of his contract is guarenteed.
February 22, 200718 yr That most likely is including his signing bonus which would be spread out for a time. If it is front loaded that is interesting though, either way he is a good 3-4 player and fits the hybrid system we run. It was a smart move. Either way once JT, KC, ZT all restructure as they always do that is another about 6-7 million room right there. Then add to it Jeno James being cut (3.7 million saved), Booker (4 million saved or 3 forget which), Mare is another million and a half. Then I could go into the others anderson, mckinney, etc etc. We have plenty of cap room to work with for whatever we want. He would be the best DT on the market in FA.
February 22, 200718 yr Lot of money spent, but who cares if we can keep the defensive line intact. :dancing
February 22, 200718 yr Pretty good move. A lot of money but still a good move. Vonnie was a monster last year.
