In 1997 Bob Costas' call was terrible. You could hear the disappointment in his voice that the 5 year old wild card team from Miami just won the world series.

Boy, you are so right. Costas was so disappointed, it was like, "and darn, the Marlins win the series, oh pooh". He hated the wild card concept UNTIL the Mets made it to the WS as a wild card.

 

 

 

Well you have to remember, Costas is a baseball traditionalist. Costas was outspoken about his dislike for the wild card. Doesnt make him a bad baseball announcer though.

Because I never forgot his unenthusiastic call at the end and his constant lack of respect for how the marlins got there-and his disdain for the wild card and how undeserving the marlins were. Yet, I also recall, and it is just my recollection, that there was none of the negativity for the subway series and the Mets of 2000. Nothing but praise-sure they were just a game behind Atlanta that year, but they were the wild card.

 

The original remark really had nothing to do with criticism about Costas as an announcer, he is good-the subject matter just drifted a bit.

Well, in all fairness, the Marlins don't exactly have a rich baseball history and a passionate fan base. World Series broadcasters tend to like it when more people are likely to watch the World Series. Costas also has a very smooth voice that is easy on the ears and he actually knows what he's talking about

DVH will tell you the game and tell it in the form of a story. If you're looking for blips and bloops to draw your ear to important aspects of the game, he's not your broadcaster.
