ESPN's take on where A-Rod ends up

Yeah, I agree with Delgot, I don't see any "money" addition as a win from here on until Cabrera's got himself a 10 year deal.

That is never happening. Samson as much as said that with his Ichiro comments.

First note is that although the marlins ranked among the bottom in attendance in 2003-2005, attendance was steadily going up. So the people who are so sure Arod wouldnt give the team an attendance bump, the numbers dont support that. Granted it wont put us in the top half in attendance either but saying ti wont improve attendance is ridiculous.

Regardless, for a team like the marlins to sign a guy like A-Rod it would do a lot of things. It would bring money in marketing but also it will increase the times the team is shown on national TV or even just mentioned in sports center and the such. Those things help young franchises get noticed and help them make money. The World Series didn't mostly because of the fact that the team has never been consistently good. We've never made the playoffs in consecutive years for example.

Now of course this is as likely to happen as Hank Aaron retunring to the majors to patrol the OF for us, but saying to use the money for the funding gap instead is also too black and white. You can backload an A-Rod contract and then trade him if necessary. Someone will always be interested in him as long as he remains healthy.

The miami heat went from being a midtier playoff team we loved down here to a national media darling when they traded for shaq. Now people in utah are wearing shaq and wade heat jerseys.

The Heat were much more widely supported down here way before we got Shaq though. Remember the days of the Heat vs the Knicks every year in the playoffs?

basketball and baseball are completely different animals, and the Heat are a world apart from the fish and have been for a real long time.

Aside from the obvious differences, like basketball being played in doors when the seasonal south Florida residents are here, the heat also never had a period like the marlins when the courtside seats were completely abandoned. The Marlins can't give away the batters box seats now, and this is the second such cycle in ten years. The Heat went from decent support to great support on the community and the media, I don't think you can say the Marlins level of support is even tepid. One player isn't going to help the Marlins get to a respectable level, its going to take a decade of consistency in terms of player development and having one or two guys be the face of the franchise.

Acquiring one of the potentially greatest players of all time will definitely increase fan support for the team as well as naitonwide popularity. Regardless of what it does to attendance.

Getting a stadium is of course the top priority, but signing a guy like A-rod is more beneficial as a business move than even signing cabrera long term woul dbe

How so? all I ever saw in the stands during regular season Heat games was a bunch of empty seats.

I have watched many games in the batters box seats and Ive always been under the impression that most if not all of those seats belong to corporations etc...........Do you know something I don't know? (Not being sarcastic, I just don't know)

Ah, but were they empty seats of season ticket holders? If they were lower bowl, even in the Miami arena days - then yes. The heat have pretty much always sold out down there. Corporations and law firms pretty much own the lower bowl, and whether they go or not is irrelevant - they're purchased tickets.

Samson said "I don't see how anyone is worth that much" after the Ichiro signing. This thread is silly. The Marlins won't even be willing to pay Hanley and Cabrera what they're worth.

Yeah, they're hurting down there. Tickets sold is at (I believe) a 5 year low. Lot of corporations didn't renew following '05 and for the first time in a long time you can buy those seats either as a full season or on gameday, and not from ticket holders.

They've come after me more than once to see if I wanted to buy some seats there.

Empty seats that are sold, and even in the thin years were sold.

Heat do a wonderfully intelligent thing with the premium seats called seat licensing contracts. Because court-side seats for a basketball game are real status items, companies have no problem purchasing them and holding them because there are 5 to 10 games a year, no matter how bad the home team is, that are real "impressive" items to have.

It's just the way basketball is, that's why I'm saying it's not a fair comparison, but it's also not fair to suggest that the Heat were ever at the level the Marlins are now over the past 6 seasons.

The Heat went from having a pretty full lower level to selling out the upper-deck, the Marlins need to do more than just worry about selling the family seats, they need the big money seats bought again just to undo 3 years worth of damage.
