IMO, Elizabeth Mitchell should have been there.

Full list is up (minus TV mini series, I'll get to that).

Nevermind, I see Terry and Michael got noms.

Thank God.

There would have been a lot of kicked puppies and mauled babies today.

Seriously, Kiefer Sutherland winning last year was a joke, but if he wins it again I'm going off. Not even close to the performance Fox gave this year from beginning to end. Not even close.

I don't know if I can even stomach watching it this year.

Denis Leary was superb in season 2 of Rescue Me but that show has fallen off so far the last season and a half its not even funny.

Ugh, this really irritates me.

Best Drama

Lost and Friday Night Lights were completely robbed of Best Drama. The Shield too. I saw the leaked Top 10 contenders list about a week ago, so I knew Deadwood and The Wire had no chance at all, but damn did they also deserve a nomination. Boston Legal! Grey's Anatomy! Are they kidding me? As for House, I think it's a great show but this season was arguably the weakest one. Heroes was a quality show. Even though I know it'll happen, I'll be pissed when The Sopranos wins.

Best Comedy

The Office FTMFW.

Best Actor - Drama

I'm rooting for Hugh Laurie all the way. Gandolfini was a lock for a nomination. But, Keifer Sutherland? This was the WORST season of 24 and was practically unwatchable. I'm meh on Leary because Season 3 of Rescue Me began the really fast decline of what used to be a really good show. Replace James Spader, Keifer, and Leary with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Chiklis (The Shield) and Matthew Fox and this list is far better.

Does Kiefer actually give a performance worthy of an Emmy though?

You reward the acting, not the character.

Even though I don't feel as strongly about comedy, Tony Shaloub had better not win again, especially over Steve Carell.

Mary-Louise Parker is infinitely better than any of those lead actress nominations. Not even close.

Same goes for Elizabeth Perkins.

Good post.

Seriously, this year sums up the Emmys pretty well.

They throw new shows bones early to seem as if they are hip and cutting edge and then go with solid, no risk choices from here on out.

The Wire being an exception. How it has gotten no major emmy nominations in it's run is incredible. I still maintain that season 2 of The Wire is the best single season of television I've ever seen. Its not as if that show has ever fallen off either. The way it has moved its story, changed its focus every year yet still maintained being a serial drama is so incredibly impressive. No faults in that show.

The Shield is a show that has never gotten its respect either sans that Emmy win in season 1 for Chikilis (see my throwing a bone line). Not to take anything away from that win, but he has been better in seasons 4, 5, and 6 without question. So has the show.

Does Kiefer actually give a performance worthy of an Emmy though?

Given the fact that he basically is that show, I think the quality of the show and the quality of his performance are correlated. To a large degree, good acting requires good writing, and the 24 writers gave him nothing to work with. That said, you can't just completely overlook that fact when judging his performance.

Mary-Louise Parker is infinitely better than any of those lead actress nominations. Not even close.

Same goes for Elizabeth Perkins.

It's a shame that she probably won't win either because she's doesn't get the massive awards push actresses on network shows get. Parker is absolutely amazing on Weeds and, though I haven't seen Ugly Betty, I just can't see how America Ferrara (the favorite to win) is better than her.

I like Boston Legal a lot and it deserves to be nominated. The Spader/Shatner duo is the best on television.

Regarding Kiefer, Jack Bauer is the James Bond of television. I love the show but he's essentially an action star, a hero. How many times has an action star been nominated for an Oscar (in an action role)? Exactly.

Pathos! Pathos! Pathos!

  • Author

Added the Guest Actors for Comedy and Drama. Also added Late Night/ Variety Talk Show nominations.

Lost being left off the ballot is an absolute travesty. Especially after this season.

I'm a Heroes fan, but I'll be the first tell you that the acting on that show is horrendous sometimes. Ali Larter couldn't deliver a line if she was handing you a screenplay in a FedEx box.

I think one of the main problems with Emmy voting is that it's based on episode submissions instead of an entire season of work. This hurts incredible shows like The Wire, which is really close to serialized film. Nothing is tied up in a single episode, and you can't just jump into the show partially through the season. This is the main reason why HBO, I think, gave advance copies of the entire season to critics as opposed to the 3 or so episodes most shows provide.

I think the throwing of bones to new shows happens when those new shows get a lot of buzz and viewers. Lost got alot of deserved love in its first season because it was a phenomenon that year. Heroes fills that role this year. And, the first season of The Shield was really like nothing else that had been seen on a network show before and was pretty well talked about if I remember correctly. (The fact that it got even better was sadly overlooked) That said, amazing new shows that don't generate alot of buzz outside of critics circles (Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, etc) rarely get their due. The new rules to allow for lesser known shows to get a chance don't work if the voters are just as guilty as the public in missing out on quality television. It's really difficult for a voter to not be biased when judging between episodes of shows they've never seen and episodes of shows that the voter actually follows.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Who Will Win: Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)

I know no one cares but she better win. I've watched this show from the beginning and it's really amazing how consistent she is. Without her, it would just be another cop drama. She really adds an element that's missing from a lot of shows.

and i don't get the hype of Ugly Betty. i always had it on while i was waiting for Grey's and it was so boring to me.

As much as I love Boston Legal (one of the most fun shows on TV), it didn't deserve the "Best Drama" nom over "Lost," especially considering this is the first time "Legal" has been nominated for "Best Drama."

I'm kind of surprised Fischer got a supporting actress nomination- surprised, but happy. Yeah, I think I would like to see Fox in the best actor over someone else too. But I don't know who to root for for best supporting actor- Shatner or O'Quinn? I guess Shat already has one, so I'll go for Locke this year.

I think NPH deserves to win for Supporting Actor. He makes that show. Rainn is great, but he's part of arguably the best ensemble comedy cast since Cheers.
