August 7, 200719 yr My argument at the time was that it really wouldn't hurt to have the arbitrators decide how much money he would receive. Instead of senselessly throwing cash at him, the Marlins could have been placed in a favorable situation where they could have saved money or would not have lost anything if ruled against their favor. It angers me that the Marlins threw away money at poor talent like Olivo and Julio and rewarded BK's good performance by shipping him off to save money. Like I said before, don't feel bad for Kim. He's with his old club and in a pennant race. And while we didn't receive any one back, we saved some money, opened up some innings for developing players and showed the franchise treats players right (which, believe it or not, includes doing things besides simply paying them) Yeah, with our track record this season, they will be on the DL after 1-3 starts. Good idea.

At this point it paid more to keep Kim just to give our younger guys a break. I have no problem calling up a few kids and getting them some work, but not at the end of July.

Just some things to consider and originally I thought these were more long shots than anything but recently I'm hearing I may be onto something (but no one is giving my direct answers, obviously) We saved $800,000. We still have yet to sign our top 3 draft picks (Dominguez, Stanton, Smith) due to money issues. Just something to think about. :mischief

It makes sense but it seems silly the Marlins have to free up $800K to sign some picks. What a cracker jack organization. Image if these guys got NFL type signing bonuses as rookies. Sheesh.

Maybe these guys are already signed and are just waiting for the dominoes to fall but I heard Matt Dominguez was starting to become a tough signee. Hopefully that isn't the case though.

August 7, 200719 yr New article about an hour ago regarding Olivo on MLBTR Marlins Willing To Listen On Miguel Olivo For what it's worth, the Marlins will apparently listen to offers for catcher Miguel Olivo. Olivo makes $2MM this year, and that will increase through arbitration next year. If the Fish can't trade him, they might nontender him. Olivo, 29, is allergic to walks. He's drawn eight in 93 games this year, and just nine in 127 games last year. He does have above-average power for a backstop. Defensively, he's gunned down more than 30% of those attempting to steal on a regular basis. Originally with the White Sox, Olivo was sent to Seattle in the Freddy Garcia deal. The Mariners sent him to San Diego in '05 for another catcher, Miguel Ojeda. The Friars decided not to offer Olivo a contract after the '05 season and the Marlins signed him. He won the starting catching job in '06 when Josh Willingham couldn't hack it defensively. Olivo is probably miscast as a starter. Yeah. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/08/marlins-willing.html

We have no right to exist.
