New AAA Team??

Featured Replies

Not sure about this, but yesterday I was talking to my buddy who runs marketing for a AA Team and he was telling me about the Marlins looking to get into Charlotte next year?

I don't mean the MLB Team but the AAA team!! I know the Marlins like the place they got in NM but would you think they would trade a closer place for a newer one?

Has anyone heard about this?

The Marlins used to have their AAA team in Charlotte. It would actually make a lot of sense to move back there. Having a AAA team in NM can make travel difficult for players being called up and sent down, especially in emergency situations.

Well, Albuquerque certainly beats Calgary, where we had our AAA team briefly...that never made any sense to me.

It would be funny to get the Charlotte Knights back after all those years.

If there is any chance of getting the AAA team in Charlotte again then it'd be worth the effort. It would mean three of our four full season minor league teams would all be in NC, with the other obviously being local in Jupiter anyway. Its hard to imagine a better situation for our affiliate setup, based on what teams are out there currently.

Didn't we used to have Edmonton as one of our affiliates?

We had the Calgary Cannons as our AAA affiliate after we lost the Charlotte team. The Cannons relocated to Albuquerque and became the Isotopes.

Before Charlotte, Edmonton was the AAA affiliate from 1993-1994.

Also, the Marlins have a player development contract with Albuquerque through 2008, so any move would not be taking place next year.

I read within the past few weeks that Charlotte has approval to build a new minor league stadium downtown (replacing the Knights current stadium, which is in Fort Mill, SC). It sounds like stadium is expected to be ready for the 2009 season.

Albuquerque is a nice place and I enjoy having the AAA team there. I challenge everyone who does not like the affiliate out there to go to Isotopes park and then tell me how bad it is. Their facilities >>> anything Charlotte would offer imho.

Has nothing to do with facilities.

The Marlins and 5 of their 6 minor league teams are on the eastern seaboard. Albuquerque is only handy if we need to fill a roster spot while the team is on a west coast swing.

Its inconvenient.

This move would be in 2009. I do not think that the Marlins really want to move from Albuquerque but I also think they would want to get closer to home base and other clubs. Like someone said Charlotte is building a new stadium so???

I have seen there complex out there and it is VERY NICE but VERY NICE if you were a team out West or Central US. It must be hard as hell when you send a guy down and have to wait a day or so just for him to get out there!!

The plus with Albequerque is they have a CF as treacherous as Dolphins Stadium. It seriously is one of the nicest, if not the nicest AAA stadiums in business.
