8/17: Marlins vs Giants @ 7:05 PM

Featured Replies

Scott Olsen has had problems off the field all season. He hasn't had much luck against the NL West, either.

After another controversy-filled day for Olsen, he will try for his first win in six starts against NL West teams when the Florida Marlins open a four-game set with the San Francisco Giants on Friday night.

Marlins president David Samson was critical of Olsen on Thursday, saying the team should part with the left-hander if he's convicted of charges stemming from a recent arrest. Olsen was arrested on July 21 after he allegedly refused to pull over and fought with police.

Matt Sosnick, Olsen's agent, said Samson's comments were out of line.

"He is the last man on earth who has the right to comment on the moral barometer of another person," Sosnick said.

Olsen's arrest came shortly after he fought with a teammate and served a two-game suspension for insubordination and conduct detrimental to the club. In June, Olsen was fined for making an obscene gesture toward fans in Milwaukee, and he scuffled with teammates at least twice last year as a rookie.

Olsen (9-9, 5.39 ERA) has regressed since that season, however, and his worst outings have been against the NL West, going 0-4 with an ERA of 8.10 ERA in five starts.

His first career win versus an NL West team was against San Francisco (51-70), allowing one run and five hits in seven innings of Florida's 5-1 victory on May 29, 2006. That was the only time Olsen has faced the Giants.

In his last start, Olsen gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings but did not receive a decision as Florida (56-65) beat the New York Mets 7-5 on Saturday night.

Olsen may not have his usual batterymate Friday, with Miguel Olivo limping out of a 5-4 loss to Arizona in the second inning with a left groin strain. He was hurt in a collision at the plate, and was replaced by Matt Treanor.

Olivo, whose 44 RBIs are fourth in the NL among catchers, is day to day.

He was part of a Marlins lineup that chased Giants starter Barry Zito (8-11, 5.13 ERA) after four innings in a 12-10 Florida win on July 27. It was one of Zito's worst starts of the season, surrendering six runs, eight hits and four walks.

The left-hander will now make his second career start against the Marlins. He has won just two of his last 13 outings, and is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in his last two.

On Sunday, Zito gave up three runs, six hits and three walks in six innings as San Francisco lost 5-0 to Pittsburgh. Zito hasn't gotten a run to work with in two of his last three starts.

Barry Bonds should be back in the lineup after getting a day off in San Francisco's 9-3 win over Atlanta on Thursday night.

The Giants also are expected to activate utilityman Rich Aurilia off the disabled list before Friday's game. He has been on the DL since Aug. 2 with a strained right hamstring.

The Giants won two of three games against the Marlins in San Francisco from July 27-29 in the only series between the teams this season.

whats with the thread tonight?

The problem with the thread tonight is because Zito is pitching a no-hitter.

fans should be used to opposing pitchers with a 5+ era pitching a great game.

nothing new really.

FYI, Olsen is pitching a pretty damn good game as well.

That's true...but what makes tonite different is that Zito has a no-hitter going.

Cody ends the NH.

You got lucky. I was going to propose a lifetime ban on starting game threads for you if we were no hit. :mischief

Loria was about two inches from being clocked in the head by a foul ball.

Willy has been outstanding tonite on D. Nice throw and nice catch.

I spent most of last season ragging on him for looking so awkward. This year he's completely turned it around. Gives some hope to some of our other defensively challenged players.
