08/24/07 Reds-Marlins Game Thoughts

Featured Replies

What a catch by Hammer! He has improved immensley on defense this year. The catch seriously blew me away.

Marlins 1-3 hitters went a combined 1-14. We can't win ballgames that way.

Willis pitched a respectable game. He got hit hard but who doesnt in that park? The bunt he layed down for a basehit was textbook.

The game was our for the taking but we didnt capitalize.

Hanley needs to seriously unfu*k himself and stay awake on the basepaths. What a rally killer that was.

Seriously. I don't have a problem with the fact that he was caught between second and third, Porter was waving then stopped right away.

But if he goes right back to second, he's safe on the errant throw. Instead he stands there with his thumb up his ass.

Uggla 0-3 with RISP also didn't exactly help.

Willis pitched pretty good he also hit which always helps. the 1 - 3 hitters deffinately struggled in this game and that was big especially in the 9th inning.

Nice catch by Hammer.

It wasn't Hanley's fault. The Reds broadcast clearly showed Porter waving frantically for Willis to round third, and given Willis lack of speed and Hanley's preponderance of it, it's not unreasonable to assume that Hanley should have been where he was when the stop sign (and a verbal one at that) was thrown up.

Abysmal coaching at third base.

Oh, and I keep saying this, if any of you guys with great stats can find Dontrelle's ERA in the inning following his team scoring, and his ERA in the inning following his team tying or taking the lead, I'd love to see it.

Nothing is ever Hanley's fault.

Just like it wasn't his fault that he just couldn't play short-stop and has to move to centerfield? :whistle

He still can't play shortstop at the major league average level.

But that's not his fault either. Damn those bush league scorers.

Leading the league in errors while displaying limited range most of the season only reinforces my comment going on four months ago. At least it's fair to say he's better than he was. I still think they were hiding an injury earlier in the season.

The fact is it's the runner's obligation to know what the runner ahead of him is doing. If the runner rounding third falls down you don't wait for the third base coach to signal what has happened, you're supposed to be reacting to what IS happening.

Yeah I must say TSwift, your out of your mind if you seriously think Hanley is a completely innocent party in that whole debacle.

For starters, the runner ahead of him is Willis. Willis is a PITCHER. Pitcher's don't run the bases well so any runner running BEHIND the pitcher needs to be extra cautious as the play develops.

I know this is a real nitpick of a discussion (its August and we are spoilers at best) but Hanley is at the very minimum 33% at fault on that play.
