August 27, 200718 yr All I used to hear were that the 9 schools and the USF Honors College in Sarasota (now 11 with FGCU's birth in 1997 from USF-Fort Myers) were just diploma mills. Now, all of a sudden, they are not getting people out timely. Which is it folks.....you can't argue it both ways. Florida's State University System is efficient, inexpensive, and a positive influence on the rest of the state.

And even while we were under the grasp of USF, we were New College of USF - The Honors College of the State University System (not USF Honors College). There was nothing on OUR campus that suggested we were a part of USF. The only thing linking us to them was our parking placards and our student ID's.

New College of Florida was part of the USF system in 1997. It was independent from USF in terms of self-governance, but USF bailed it out. As an New College alum, your characterization of the school is not correct. While New College was "part" of USF until 2001, we were more of an independent school. New College students could not take USF classes and USF students couldn't take New College classes. The arrangement was pretty much that USF took care of our physical plant. As for a "bail out," it was the State University System, not USF that did the bail out. The partnership with the state in 1975 created a partnership between the State and the New College Foundation, which operated similar to that of a private college. That allowed private money to supplement the state money and allowed New College to maintain its 10:1 student to faculty ratio and in-state tuition. New College was "assigned" to USF as part of an agreement to give USF access and use of the New College campus for "USF-Sarasota." Today, "USF-Sarasota" has a completely separate campus from New College which was part of our "Declaration of Independence." My point earlier was that New College was never considered the "Honors College of USF," but the Honors College of Florida. As for the others that posted here, NCF is not just "a bunch of hippies." The vast majority of students there (when I was there and even today) are normal kids with exceptionally high test scores and intellects. I am glad that I got to go to a college without a Greek system or jockocracy. I won't say the place was a "haven" for hot co-eds, but I'll never exchange my education and experiences there!
August 28, 200718 yr But NCF is still a state school, albeit with a different approach. I think you would agree that none of our 11 state schools is a diploma mill. I go to the second largest school in the system and I got into my classes without much issue. Would it be nice to have more buildings and professors so more classes could be held....sure. But FSU already has a ton of construction going on with the finishing of the New Classroom Building and the continued work of the new Chemistry Building. Plus, FSU is looking to hire 200 new professors....6 of which will be related to Meteorology. So a plan is there, but why are all these attacks coming all of sudden? Especially on the fact that Bright Futures and the State University System, as a whole, look at merit before anything else. Sounds like some in the Ivory Tower don't like the fact Florida doesn't give a care what your parents' bank account looks like (or if it even exists) as long as you have the grades, study, and behave. Isn't that the way it should be?
