August 27, 200719 yr I know how much you guys care about tennis, but I figured I have to honor the only Grand Slam even that this country hosts. It would be un-patriotic if I didn't. So basically, if you don't care about the US Open, you don't care about America. But, you guys love America, right? This opening draw kicks off today in Flushing, Queens. Key matches out there today: Donald Young (black/american/just won junior Wimbledon/debuts in Grand Slam) v. Chris Guccione Max Mirnyi v. Marcos Baghdatis (match of the day) Roger Federer v. Scoville Jenkins (another black american debuting)
August 27, 200719 yr Finally, I have something on this board to keep my preoccupied while the Marlins spiral into emptiness. Hey, Scoville Jenkins is a young fellow, and he did alright for his first US Open match considering it was against the greatest tennis player of all time. Federed took it straight at 2,3,4 of course, but I was impressed. Donald Young gets through to the 2nd round today in 4 sets, and Isner is putting up a fight right now as well. I'm optimistic about the future of American Tennis. If you're looking for a good match, Verdasco and Matheiu are going at it right now. It's on Court 8. That's unbelievable. They are both quality players.
August 28, 200719 yr Author Young played a hell of a match and was making some sick shots. Looks like he has a great future. I saw Isner play a couple of weeks ago, though didn't get to see him today.
August 28, 200719 yr I don't know if you guys know anything about Isner, but he is kind of a late developer. He actually played 4 full years of college tennis at UGA (led them to the national title). It's extremely uncommon for a professional tennis player to finish school, but he did. He is very unrefined in every aspect of his game, but he might possibly have the best serve on the tour. His serve is slightly quicker than Roddick's and has a considerable greater amount of kick. He has solid ground strokes as well, but his foot work isn't something to be desired, and net play shouldn't even come into consideration. I don't expect either of them to get very far, but it's a great surprise to watch both Young and Isner win. Young has Gasquet next, so there goes his 07 run, but Isner has some qualifier... so it's possible he might get through. Although, his 3rd round matchup; Roger Federer,
August 28, 200719 yr Author Taller players really never pan out. Marat Safin did, but apparently doesn't care anymore. Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina is another young giant with killer groundstrokes/backhand, but horrible footwork.

August 28, 200719 yr Berdych is 6'5" -- Murray is 6'4" Being tall is not a disadvantage. Not moving your feet well is a disadvantage, and tall players tend not to move their feet because they rely on their massive serves and ground strokes their entire career. They don't pan out because at the upper echelon of tennis, you cannot win with just a big serve. You HAVE to be a complete player. We have been watching Roddick go through these growing pains for 4 years now.
August 29, 200719 yr Roddick wins in 3 sets. I didn't see the first set, but he looked great in the final two sets. Serve was definitely on tonight. And seemed he was playing with an extra step/more energy/confidence. Of course its the first round against a sub par opponent. haha. Good stuff anyways. I love the US Open. Now I wish there were a couple good American players to cheer for. (Roddick always gets my hopes up and lets me down)

August 30, 200719 yr Isner won in straight sets. I only saw bits and pieces of his match but I was surprised to see him returning so many low shots. He had a lot of shots bounce and skip just over the net. Looks real good though, how he manages that frame in a sport like this is beyond me. Great story so far. I hope he keeps it going.

Sept. 2nd; Roger Federer. It is a good story, though.
August 30, 200719 yr Ah, well yes you are right then. :lol I'll take a moral victory of a single set though.
August 30, 200719 yr Author Chucho Acasuso v. Andy Roddick today. Damn it, there goes another Argentine out.
August 30, 200719 yr Ah, well yes you are right then. :lol I'll take a moral victory of a single set though. Federer will have a seriously tough road to the Semi's... Isner (as tough as they get for 3rd round) Gasquet (likely will advance to the 4th) Roddick (likely will advance to the quarters) Man, his return of serve is either going to be on spot or destroyed by the time he gets to the semis. There might not be 2 better serves in the game outside of Roddick and Isner, and Gasquet is tough when he plays like he knows he can. He usually plays well against Federer.
August 30, 200719 yr Author Andy Murray is playing on tv right now. This kid has been hyped as hell, I'd like to see more of him. He gets injured a lot. I saw him play against Roddick at the Sony Ericsson and win (Roddick retired). He looked real solid, but haven't seen much of him since. His coach is stupid ass Brad Gilbert. I can't stand that guy.
August 31, 200719 yr Roddick to the third round. Lost the first set, but came back after Acasuso injured his quad to win the next two sets and then Acasuso retired. Donald Young (18 year old America) advances as Gasquet retires with a 'viral' thing... Andy Murray won after losing the first set too. Blake on now (and looking like sh*t). So many unforced errors...he should be killing this guy. Kind of off topic, but has anyone read about this tennis fixing thing that a bunch of players may be involved in?
August 31, 200719 yr This Blake Santoro match has been incredibly entertaining to watch...Santoro sure is making Blake earn it. Not many unforced errors, but barely any winners. Blake has been atrocious on his first serve. I'm convinced Blake threw the fourth set so he could win his first 5 setter...haha

That 5th set was amazing. Really happy for Blake.
August 31, 200719 yr Fantastic match...Blake wins his first 5 setter, but if he wants to go anywhere in this tourney he is going to have to play a hell of a lot better. Not to be a jerk because I realize Santoro was tired as hell. I think he was overplaying that injury a bit. Man makes you earn in it though.
