Baseball in Canada

Featured Replies

I just saw an article about the Ottawa Lynx playing thier last game before their move to allentown PA. Does anyone else notice the trend of canadian teams who dont draw moving to the US. most notably the expos(which im not going to lie...it would be cool to still have the expos) but also winnepeg and calgary being others. Also the blue jays are the only professional team above the class A level that still call canada home. just wanted to see if anyone found that really weird? if there are any canadians in the forum i would love insight on baseball in canada

The exchange rate and the travel is probably too annoying for players anyway.

I felt bad for the Expos when they kept having to go back and forth between Puerto Rico and Montreal their last season or so.

Hey i live in South Florida but i am a Canadian and i go to school in montreal....baseball is not as dead as it seems here. I mean we all know that hockey trumps over anything but in the summer there are many basball and softball leagues here and many people follow baseball. TSN channel covers every blue jaays game but i think baseball is just not as popular becuase of the weather here and the fact that it can only be played a few months each year. Not that it snows all the other months but it is just too cold to play ball for most people. When many people here think of baseball...they think of the Expos and as much as i would love to have them here to see the marlins...people do not have fond memories of the Expos last years especially after the whole loria saga.

The decline of the Blue Jays and the death of the Expos probably has the most to do with it. The mid 80s-early 90s were probably the Golden Era of Canadian baseball. I doubt baseball will ever be as followed as it was during that period in Canada. The ingredients just aren't there.
