October 21, 200323 yr From ESPN's site, here are the 2003 salaries for the 2 lineups. A few seem out of line, so either there is serious incentive money that is not included in the salary, or they are just plain wrong. C- Pudge $9.3M; Posada $8M 1B - Lee $4.5M; Nick Johnson $364K 2B - Castillo $4.85M; Soriano $800K??!! SS - Sea Bass $1.7M; Jeter $15.6M (but Jeter is not hitting 9x as well!) 3B - Lowell $3.7M; Boone $3.7M LF - Conine $4.25M; Matsui $6M CF - Pierre $1M; Williams $12.4M RF - Encarnacion $3.45M; Garcia $900K (enough to cover assault and battery?) DH - Cabrera n/a; Giambi $11.4M Totals: Marlins $32.75M (+Cabrera) (of $45M total?); Yankees $59.1M (of $180M total?) I thought the difference would be much huger than that. Sorry - not going to go through the entire rosters to see how the pitchers and reserves stack up. :banghead Tomorrow's starters: Beckett $1.7M Mussina $12M
October 21, 200323 yr SS - Sea Bass $1.7M; Jeter $15.6M (but Jeter is not hitting 9x as well!) arguable
October 21, 200323 yr SS - Sea Bass $1.7M; Jeter $15.6M (but Jeter is not hitting 9x as well!) arguable Jeter's not hitting .882 in the playoffs. He didn't hit 162 home runs this year. I honestly can't believe Jeter makes 15.6 millions dollars. I might get ripped for this, but if Jeter was a Pirate and not a Yankee, he'd be considered an above average shortstop, at best, not a superstar.
October 21, 200323 yr Jeter produces in the clutch and in the playoffs *ducks* Well, that much I won't argue. He's a .314 career post-season hitter with 11 HR and 28 RBI in 322 ABs, 82 games, not counting this season. I also can't knock his .317 lifetime average, but I still don't think he's anywhere close to a superstar if he's not a Yankee. Jeter's career averages are .317, 17 HR, 82 RBI, 69 BB, 117 SO. I mean look at the "Similar Batters" list on baseball-reference.com (pretty cool feature): 1. Glenn Wright 2. Ray Durham 3. Edgardo Alfonzo 4. John Valentin 5. Jeff Blauser 6. Johnny Logan 7. Jeff Cirillio 8. Gil McDougald 9. Jack Rowe 10. Carlos Baerga Similar batters through age 28 do include hall of famers Travis Jackson, Arky Vaughan, Joe Cronin, Frankie Frisch, and Bobby Doerr. But, there's plenty of guys in the hall of fame who weren't superstars. Good player, sure, but I don't think he's one of the 10 best in the game today and he's certainly presented as such. And to get back to my orginial point, I guess, certainly not worth 15 million dollars. You could get 2 guys who put up similar numbers for that.
October 21, 200323 yr Bottom line, 7 out of 9 players in the Yankee lineup have never played for another team. No other team in the playoffs [or baseball] could say that. Not one. Which 7 players in your lineup are you talking about? Because last I checked, Giambi, Boone, Matsui - even Garcia - havent only worn pinstripes in their careers. And dont get started on the pitching... And Marlins who have been professionals with this team alone include Lee, Castillo, Gonzalez, Lowell, Cabrera. And dont get me started on the pitching... That said, the Yanks have developed premium talent - Soriano, Jeter, Posada, Petite - even Nick Johnson is coming around. And they should be comended. The guys they have signed are complimenting the current core players. Yes, even Giambi. The same thing with the '97 Marlins - Money does not equal winning. But here is where the Marlins are superior. We are not vastly overspending, like the Yankees are. $180MM? And this is what you get? We spend $50MM and get the same result - World Series. The point is, the Yankees certainly dont have to spend that much money - they could do it cheaper and get more value. But why should they? I am happy with this team, and we can keep it together even after this season - and challenge the Yankees in the WS again next year for far less than it will cost them. You can have Contreras, we got Burnett - who is younger, cheaper, and better. Look at the bottom line fellas. Marlins are the better value and in a sense, a better organization.
October 21, 200323 yr lets not forget awhile back when it was a close race, and Jose Canseco was on the block. The Yankees got him just to sit him so no one trying to beat them could have him. This is just one example. When I say the Yanks buy championships I mean with their midseason moves. They get players that make little sense for them to get...the only reason is to keep them off the market so other players can't get him. In a way its kinda like Microsoft! Both owners of each respectful companies are EVIL!
October 21, 200323 yr Totals: Marlins $32.75M (+Cabrera) (of $45M total?); Yankees $59.1M (of $180M total?) Update: It's more like $164M to $54M. *Only* a 3-1 ratio... Just for laughs, I'd love to see Yankee fans react to going up against a team with a $500M payroll!
October 21, 200323 yr Author 1. Soriano 2. Jeter 3. Nick Johnson 4. Bernie Williams 5. Posada 6. Godzilla - Japanese Unis don't count hence the "rookie" label 7. Juan Rivera In NL parks we can add Mo, Pettitte, and Contreras.
October 21, 200323 yr Author How they break down side by side: Posada - Farm [watched him in Albany, NY] Pudge - FA [Rangers] NJ - Farm D Lee - Trade [Padres] Soriano - Farm Castillo - Farm Boone - Trade [Reds] Lowell - Trade [from Yanks] Jeter - Farm [watched him in Albany, NY] A Gone - Farm Matsui - Farmish [signed from Japanese team] Cabrera - Farmish [signed from Venezuelan team] Bernie - Farm [watched him in Albany, NY] Pierre - Trade [Rockies] Juan Rivera - Farm Encarnacion - Trade [Reds] Pettitte - Farm [watched him in Albany, NY] Beckett - Farm Mo - Farm [watched him in Albany, NY] Urbina - Trade [urbina] Everyone else on either team was acquired either by trade or through FA. Bernie Williams is the only Yankee farm player who predates the Marlins.

October 22, 200323 yr Jeter produces in the clutch and in the playoffs *ducks* Very reluctantly agreed. He seems to have a knack for finding the weakness and exploiting it, whether a surprise bunt, surprise steal, or a late-inning double down the RF line past the 1B who is 37 steps towards 2B for some unknown reason... He's slightly more valuable than Sea Bass, I have to admit.
October 22, 200323 yr your looking at these trades that the marlins got as not devoloping talent. Most of the players the marlins got aside from Pudge where young and raw talent that had to come of age. The Yankees trade or sign the best available player for a given position each year. Meanwhile the Marlins have to go on a wim of what a player may become. Give me $160 million to put a winner on the field and I guarntee that I would be in the series each year.
