September 25, 200718 yr The Marlins have decided to send 2 pitchers out to Hawaii for this year?s Hawaii Winter Baseball League. Those two pitchers being starting pitcher Brett Sinkbeil and reliever Jacob Marceaux. Both players will be on the North Shore Honu. Sink and Jake were each hurt for parts of the year, so getting them the extra work is a good thing (while I other prospects like VandenHurk, Thompson, Volstad and Hernandez have all been shut down). Taken with the 19th overall pick out of Missouri State in the 2006 draft, Brett Sinkbeil figures to be on the fast track to the majors. Brett fell a bit in the draft because of a strained oblique muscle that kept him out of a few starts late in his final season at MSU. He throws a sinking fastball in the low 90s, that can hit 95 on occasion. He has a good slider as his secondary pitch, and an improved changeup as well. He can locate his pitches all over the zone, and throws a ton of strikes. In his final season at MSU, Sinkbeil was 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 starts. He tossed one complete game, and logged 69 2/3 innings. He struck out 75 and walked 23, with opponents batting .184 against him. In his first pro season for the Marlins, he showed alot of promise. Opposing batters at Jamestown hit just .192 off of him, but he got hit a bit harder in Greensboro. Not one to make excuses, it was a long full season for Sinkbeil, and that obviously showed as his velocity started to decrease in Greensboro and he was hit at a tune of .290 by opposing hitters. This season in Jupiter, injuries held him to just 14 starts, but he did manage a 6-4 record to go with a 3.24era in 79 innings. He walked 14 while striking out 49. The fast track slowed a bit for him, but he could see major league action in 2008 if need be. Sinkbeil?s teammate in Jupiter, Jacob Marceaux also will be making the journey out to the islands. Drafted with the 29th pick in the 2005 draft out of McNeese State, Jake had a rough go of it early in his professional career, but he has turned the corner over the past 2 seasons. All of his numbers improved from Greensboro to Jupiter in 2006, including dropping his whip from 2.49 to 1.40 and his k/9 from 5.49 to 6.14. His fastball sits at the 92-93 range an tops out in the mid 90s, but his problem early on was overthrowing. The Marlins blame themselves for his early struggles because they made an adjustment to his delivery, which made him close his front side. After months of struggles, they told him to go back to his old form and his numbers have been improving ever since. All four of his pitches have been graded out as + pitches at some point. To go along with his fastball, he has a mid 80s slider, a mid 70s spike curveball and a changeup. This season was his first out of the bullpen and he had his moments. He was limited to just 40 innings because of injury and his numbers really suffered after his return from injury. Jake had a 5.85era to go with a 1.50whip. Hopefully out in Hawaii he can stay healthy and build up a good rhythm. Marceaux should spend most of 2007 in Carolina.

October 1, 200718 yr Author Jake made his first appearance in the Hawaii Winter League for the North Shore Honu yesterday. He threw a scoreless inning but walked 3 as the Honu won, 8-3. His control or lacktherof will be something to keep an eye on.
October 9, 200718 yr Updated stats for Jake and Sink, as of 10/08: Jake: 0-0 0 ER, 0.00 ERA, 6.2 IP, 4H, 5 BB, 5 Ks, 1.35 WHIP, .182 BAA Sink: 0-0 1 ER, 4.50 ERA, 2.0 IP, 4H, 2 BB, 1 K, 3.00 WHIP, .400 BAA Small sample size so far. Definately need to keep an eye on Jake's control. Seems like he's throwing well when he's not walking guys.

October 26, 200718 yr Sinkbeil continues to tear it up, as he threw a 1 hitter threw 4 IP yesterday. He did walk 4, though. His stats for the AFL are below. They are very impressive. 2-0, 0.90 ERA, 20 IP, 11 H, 3 R (2 ER), 9 BB, 15 K, 1.00 WHIP Like to see him gain a little control and pick up the K's a bit. But none the less, a great Fall thus far.
