The TBS Popping Their MLB Coverage Cherry Thread

Featured Replies

What I like is how ESPN is no longer guaranteed the "top" MLB broadcast talent that FOX doesn't use. Before ESPN would horde anyone they could, but now TBS has 4 crews and ESPN Radio has 4 crews.

Stockton works on FOX MLB telecasts too as their 6th string voice when the NFL on FOX doesn't need him to call a football game, but Buck, Albert, and Vasgersian are calling football. So I'm used to the idea of him calling baseball games because he's called several Marlins games on FOX over the last few years.

Ted Robinson has done pretty well, I feel, with his call considering he hasn't done baseball in over 10 years.

Ted Robinson was the Mets play-by-play guy until a year or two ago.

Mets telecasts don't count, I mean national games. Don Orsillo is rookie in the TBS ranks even though he has done the NESN job for a few years now.

It is one thing to cover a home team, another to cover national games.

Huh?

What's the difference? You sit down and describe what is going on in the game.

Robinson is terrible.

Can't just sit down and call a game. They also have to talk to the players, coaches, manager, etc. They have to have material and a game plan.

That's alot easier day-to-day with a home ballclub than doing a national game with a team you may have not seen before.

I give Orsillo big props for knowing a good amount about the Rockies even though he may have never seen them before. That's a real pro.

But TBS could have done alot worse than Robinson. I mean, they could have had Frank Caliendo up there calling that series with Steve Stone.

Ted Robinson has forgotten what counts were, how many outs, he's been awful. To his credit though, he isn't a good fit with Stone. He could use a color guy who takes up a lot more air time.

Stone offers up nothing. He's just a prick with a soap box.

Robinson goes on and on about players, coaches, managers, owners, umpires, fans in the stands, etc. for about 1/2 the game. He sucks at it.

If Robinson does not know much about the Angels and Red Sox he needs to go back under his rock and never broadcast a ML game again. This isn't a case of Robinson not being prepared, this is a case of Robinson just not being good at baseball.

TBS could have stuck Don Orsillo with Joe Simpson to do that series, but that would have caused a conflict easily with a NESN announcer (on the Red Sox payroll basically) calling a Red Sox game for a national network. It's one thing if you are Vin Scully, Jack Buck, Joe Buck, Skip Caray, or Chip Caray all who have big mouths and have their lovers/haters....but Orsillo is low key and it would just be uncomfortable I would think. Imagine if he called his partner on TBS Remy by accident on air.

Again, that's the NBC formula. Costas did it in 1997 as well. We all knew 500 million times that Bip Roberts was sick in Games 6 & 7 thanks to Bob.

Why do you think so many get frustrated with NBC Sports especially around the Olympics?

But he seems well-prepared for the games and his errors are mostly rustiness from not calling a national game in over 10 years.

Hot rumor just for Festa: Ted Robinson has applied for the open Marlins radio job. :p

They should have put Orsillo and Simpson on Indians-Yankees, and Caray, Brenly and Gwynn on Red Sox-Angels.

Angels-Red Sox is not a #1 series matchup, Yankees-Indians is a better matchup for TBS to give more effort on. Remember, TBS wouldn't have reset its crews during the Division Series. So if the Tribe had swept the Yanks and the Angels hadn't been swept, tonight's only game would have Ted Robinson and Steve Stone calling it.

Had the Mets gotten in, they would have been #1 with Yankees-Indians being #2 and Angels-Red Sox sliding down to #4 because TBS wants to avoid having Don Orsillo call Red Sox games.
