October 1, 200718 yr I'm really interested in how well (or not so well) TBS handles covering a large portion of the playoffs. Personally, I'm happy ESPN is no longer covering the division series as I despise their broadcast teams and such. Here is some general information on how the coverage on the network will work: Top broadcast team: Chip Caray (Play by Play) / Tony Gwynn (Color) / Bob Brenley (Color) / Craig Sager (Field/TNT) Other teams/announcers: Don Orsillo (Play by Play/NESN) / Joe Simpson (Color/TBS) / Jose Mota (Field/Spanish Angels) Ted Robinson (Play by Play) / Steve Stone (Color/WGN) / David Aldridge (Field/TNT) Dick Stockton (Play by Play/FOX) / Ron Darling (Color/SNY) / Marc Fein (Field/TBS) Studio: Ernie Johnson (Anchor) / Cal Ripken Jr. (Analyst) / Frank Thomas (Analyst) On paper, those look to be pretty solid teams. I'd rather there be no 3 man teams but only one is fine to me. TBS coverage will presented as: MLB on Deck (pre-game) Game Inside MLB (post-game) If a current TBS game goes long, the next game will be put on TNT. So basically, I thought this would be a good thread to comment strictly on their coverage and such as we all have opinions on commentary and such.
October 1, 200718 yr No HD on TBS for me is a big letdown (I subscribe to Dish Network), not sure if other providers are broadcasting in HD (or if TBS has the capability now).
October 1, 200718 yr I'm not going to be able to watch the first round and the NLCS in HD. :confused That blows big time, but TBS doesn't get the blame for that, Comcast does. -Caray might be somewhat tolerable if he's kept away from the Cubs series as much as possible. If he isn't a blatant homer as he is on the Braves telecasts I'll be happy. -Orsillo is SOLID. I love his voice. -Never heard of Robinson. -Stockton is another solid guy. I enjoy him over Joe Buck these days. -Gwynn and Brenly are going to be amazing. I'm interested in seeing if TBS undergoes a graphics overhaul for the play-offs and the HD format. The best part about this move is.... NO CHRIS BERMAN! ESPN has not been treated well by MLB in the last few months (well deserved). First they get kicked out of AT&T Park, and now they can't broadcast from play-off sites.
October 1, 200718 yr No HD on TBS for me is a big letdown (I subscribe to Dish Network), not sure if other providers are broadcasting in HD (or if TBS has the capability now). I believe DTV has TBSHD. As of a few days ago, the only markets to have TBSHD on cable were the Atlanta and Baltimore areas. (EDIT: See Fox's post.)
October 1, 200718 yr Author I thought Comcast was going to have TBS in HD in time? I know DirecTV gets it as I've seen the channel. It has just come recently though. I think Orsillo will do a good job he has a great voice and as long as he is kept away from Jerry Remy he will be fine. I'm not a big Steve Stone guy. The best thing to me, and even in it's infancy I'm willing to bet it will be better then ESPN or Fox is TBS' studio team. Ernie Johnson is simply the man and I've always said on here that Cal Ripken Jr. would be a great color guy, analyst he may be an even better choice. Frank Thomas is a great choice too. TBS got that team to debut and ESPN has Kruk and Steve Phillips. :| Edit: Festa, Apparently it is popping up in the Boston and other areas per SOSH.
October 1, 200718 yr i don't like the main team. it looks like a buck/mccarver clone. chip caray and tony gwynn are big talkers (to the point where they never stop), especially caray, he just talks and talks and talks. i had to mute him several times during braves telecasts. many braves fans feel the same way. the rest of the teams are decent to solid. i hope this isn't another fox clone with poor top teams and better bottom teams.
October 1, 200718 yr Author The difference being, Gwynn knows what he is talking about whereas McCarver is an absolute idiot. Imagine commentary teams TALKING a lot. The horror. :lol
October 1, 200718 yr Furcalchick, maybe if you weren't so stupid you would be able to understand what Gwynn was talking about. :whistle I haven't been able to find anything on TBS-HD in South Fla. Just a lot of news that makes me want to switch over to DTV and exploit all their HD channels in ways I can only imagine.
October 1, 200718 yr Author Needs more Byrnes. Has a little to do with him actually being in the playoffs. Or am I missing something?

There's your confirmation.
October 1, 200718 yr Hopefully the'll do better than they did with the All-Star selection show. That was awful. I felt like I was watching Sun Sports. Gwynn and Ripken are just about as boring as they get too.
October 1, 200718 yr I thought I remembered hearing Harold Reynolds signed with TBS, but I guess not. That's too bad I miss HR.

Turner Sports is solid, but their announcing stable is a bit disappointing. They should have put Skip Caray in with Don Orsillo (with Skip doing Color) and move Joe Simpson to pair him with Stockton. Then you could get rid of Ron "Ding Dong" Darling and all would be fine. One big change is that TBS has exclusive rights, no over-the-air simulcast in the home cities of the teams playing anymore. Oh, and had TBS been able to get Dick Enberg...that so would have PWNED. I still don't understand how ESPN gets away with not having Enberg call baseball games.

I myself would like Chip Caray and Bob Brenly only for the top team. Having Bob Brenly on the big stage again is awesome.

The guy even won an Emmy for his work.
October 1, 200718 yr TBS-HD DirecTV - Channel 247 Dish Network - Channel ??? Comcast - Available Time Warner Cable - Available Cablevision - Available Bright House Networks - Available Cox - Available Work In Progress, Subject to Change
October 1, 200718 yr I hate Caray with a passion. One of the worst play by play guys in baseball. I'll deal with him because I love Brenly and Gwynn.

Darling was murder in DC on MASN. He's a bit better for the Mets on SNY, but it takes 1 Darling + 1 Keith Hernandez for SNY to equal 1 color analyst.
October 1, 200718 yr Author I read you wrong, I thought you said Chip Caray. My fault. I think that Caray was better with the Cubs then he was when I heard him this year, but I don't dislike him. We'll have to see how he does in the DS. Plus, I met the guy in Chicago and he was nice as hell so maybe I'm just biased. :lol
