November 10, 200718 yr As I am about to embark on my journey to do our top 50 spects, I have come to the realization that our farm system blows. It's in absolute shambles right now. This is probably the weakest I have ever seen it since I started following minor league baseball about 6-7 years ago. Of course things can certainly change with a trade or two, but at this point, it's very very week.
November 10, 200718 yr Yea definitely looking pretty barren, and it could be even worse next season. We've seen college guys tear up the Greensboro before, only to falter and lose any prospect status they had. This is a make or break year for guys like Coghlan, Raynor, Cousins, etc. If they do put up numbers in Jupiter, at least we know we have some position prospects to get excited about.
November 11, 200718 yr I mean, we've got a consensus top 5 of Gaby, Volstad, Vandy, Coghlan and Thompson, right? Probably in that order...? Then you've got the Garcia's and Delgado's of the system plus the injured, like West.
November 11, 200718 yr Haven't I just in the last ***week*** at least a couple of very complimentary comments regarding the Marlins minor league system? I know Lisa Winton just commented on it but it seems to me there have been others recently? (no sarcasm, just trying to remember where, and in what context, I saw them) ***edit***

November 11, 200718 yr So what you're really saying is that it isn't that we don't have a lot of talented players in the minors, but rather right now most of them are still in the developmental stages of their professional careers.

Of course things can certainly change with a trade or two, but at this point, it's very very week. Ramp I have been getting that feeling as well. The depth of talent in our farm system appear to be lowest. There our some good arms but not enough oh the prospects that knock your socks off. Position player...well what can be said? There are only a couple of graded A prospects within our minor leagues affiliates. Most of them still seem light years away from the majors when it comes to readiness.

He's very raw, he didn't have a ton of AB's in his professional debut and what he did show was an inability to even hit .200. Volstad, Vandy and Thompson/Gaby have to be ranked higher.

Well Vanden Hurk won't be considered a prospect, for one... and just looking at how BA has done the Mets, Braves and Nats, they seem to rate the new draft class pretty high I'm probably going to stick with Volstad as my number one... but what our org lacks in stud talent, atleast we are pretty deep... I guess that's nice
November 11, 200718 yr What we are missing are the Josh Beckett, Jeremy Hermida and Charles Johnson type of prospects in our minors
November 13, 200718 yr The level of talent in the farm system might have something to do with everyone worthwhile going onto the big league roster and/or DL.
November 23, 200718 yr The level of talent in the farm system might have something to do with everyone worthwhile going onto the big league roster and/or DL. That's the real downside to the firesale method. We've got a very solid group of players (position at least), many of whom are performing equal to or better than their predecessors, but because we pushed every bit of talent in our system to the majors, and we don't bring in any legitimate free agents, we don't have the reinforcements that good ballclubs have and that is goign to hurt us for a numebr of years. Possibly until this latest crop reaches free agency and we have to start all over again (another obvious problem is that a good number of our rookies are going to progress through the arbitration and free agency process at the same time.
November 23, 200718 yr The level of talent in the farm system might have something to do with everyone worthwhile going onto the big league roster and/or DL. I think it has much to do with the mediocre job Beinfest has done drafting players and signing players not eligible for the draft.

He's not in the majors because he's not ready, and he turned 21 in September anyway, I finally ordered our guys.... should start firing out some reports shortly and we'll countdown from 50 to 1 in the next few weeks gotta send out some emails though... a few of the guys I don't know much about

November 26, 200718 yr The problem with our talent level within our farm system has been frequently brought up. It is mainly for 2 reason. Our international scouting has produced zilcho, nada, absolutely nothing (Except maybe for Vanden Hurk). Foreign talent pools signings are few and pretty much insignificant. The main reason is the Marlins approach to the Draft, is tactical and seems to be a paradigm which results in what appears to be drafting the same player over and over again. If you look closely it is almost the same type of player in the same drafting position, I almost couldn't believe it when Dominguez was picked because this has parted from what the Marlins had done in the last 3 or 4 drafts. There is also an aspect of signability which takes precedence over talent when the Marlins select a player This is why we don't have the HUGE HOT PROSPECTS in our farm system but we do have a lot of solid arms coming up the pipeline.
November 26, 200718 yr The problem with our talent level within our farm system has been frequently brought up. It is mainly for 2 reason. How many drafted or signed as undrafted free agents by the current regime have been brought up and not sucked? Josh Johnson and Jeremy Hermida. I guess you could throw Tank in there but as a reliever his value is diminished. The problem is NOT that our players have been brought up... and the pipeline is not very promising.

Frequently brought up as discussed many times before in this forum. We have heard all this in prior threads
