Hardcore metal shows

Featured Replies

So my lady had plans to go to a show in DC tonight but her friends bailed. She and I were talking and I got the vibe she wanted me to volunteer to go with her, because going to this venue alone is apparently asking to be raped. At least that's what she said.

Anyway, I bought my ticket and we're going.. but the bands are As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red. I listened to some of their stuff and I think I'm going to die. I'm more of an old school rock guy and haven't been to one of these "shows."

Anybody here been to shows with bands like this? Got any advice? What should I expect?

I've never seen or heard August Burns Red, but from my experience with As I Lay Dying, their crowds aren't as bad as many I've been to. But I tell you one thing, only get close if you are prepared to get kicked in the face. That's not a joke, it just happens with crowd surfers and the like. My better half happens to be a huge fan of these things, and is a magnet to kicks to the head. She also got a drumstick to the face once (damned Street Drum Corps)...

Now, if kicks to the face are not your thing, I suggest staying toward the back.

Or kinda off to the side, I went to a metal concert and managed to find a spot at the lead singers 10 o' clock perspective (just off to his left, for those not familiar with the terminology) but yeah, watch who you're next to, and otherwise, enjoy the show as best you can I guess

I've been several times to metal shows. Just be prepared for mosh pits to form all around you. As long as you dont jump in one, you should be fine.

However, if you have a chance I would recommend jumping in atlest once. I think its a lot of fun, it just depends on the crowd. I went to see Bury your dead last year, and even I didnt jump in the mosh pit because people were punching eachother. However it all depends. I went to see Killswitch engage and they had a great pit where no one was kicking eachother or anything like that.

Also make sure you have several drinks before you go.

Mr. Dodge you will have the time of your life my friend... I pretty much agree with everything Jet said... The pits are going to from around you.. Just be careful of getting dragged into one..

Best advice Jets gave was to jump into one! So what if its only 1-2 mins in there! You will have a blast! Nothing like a Pit and some drinks in your system!

HAVE FUN! :super :super :super :super :super :super

She says we can go anywhere in the venue. I will probably want to spend a health amount of time on the balcony just seeing what the music is like. Hopefully I won't stick out like a sore thumb.

Thanks for the advice boys.

I agree the side is the best bet. Depending on the venue it may not matter, but if it is just a small club people will be very pushy.

Where black and you will blend right in.

i've gone to a fair amount of uptempo shows - not a bad bet to stay on the sides at first - i would probably avoid the balcony - if your girl is into this type of stuff it'll probably be boring to her

pending on who is playing I'll usually stay on the fringe of the pit - occasionally getting swept in, but having control over when I want to engage - just keep your eyes open - things move pretty fast

i am a fellow tall scandivanian looking guy with a clean cut demeanor - never had a problem blending in though - just get into the show - i've had a great time with all sorts of scary looking people

just make sure you don't have the d'bags who like to go in there throwing punches
