Why the hate on Uggla?

Just to clarify - I'm not all about batting average. I just thought bobbob's comment that there are "plenty of guys who can hit .240 and be way more valuable than the guys hitting .350" is BS and cannot be backed up historically outside of maybe a few random anomalies.

It was obviously hyperbole. But .270 vs. .320 is easy to demonstrate.

Which is about a hit per week, maybe less.

My arguably unscientific calculations say it is about 1.5 hits per 7 games. I would have thought it was higher than that.

Also, that obviously wouldn't takes slumps and hot streaks into effect.

OPS is pretty consistent to runs scored, batting average has little relationship. Last years MLB stats show that the top 8 OPS teams are the top 8 run scoring teams in each league.

That correlation is there every single year. The OPS / runs scored correlation is amazing.

Statistics are used for more than runs scored and runs prevented. :thumbup

A little late on this thread but I just wanted to make the point that a demotion from the 2 to 5/6 spot in the lineup is not a negative demotion. In other words, the type of player he is just doesn't inherently belong that high up in the order.

I personally think that freddy's mentality is that a strikeout hitter who walks a ton, and manages to work a pitcher is a valueble asset in the two hole, because it'll enable Uggla to see more pitches ahead of the third and fourth hitter, giving him a better chance to connect. I think Uggla would be Ideal for the 5-6 spot only when we can find an adequate number two hitter, to me Amezaga comes to mind, but I still feel that before we can plug him in there we need to see where his production is on an everyday bases, until then I'd like Uggla to stay at the two hole.

The only things that matter, that can also be reflected in stats, are runs scored and runs prevented.

Maybe, if you want to talk about batting average being a useful metric to judge the upside of some guy in A ball, it might be mildly interesting, but really walks and doubles work better.
