You know its amazing how everyone thinks david wright is deserving of a gold glove and i will say he does make some nice plays. However, wright does have 8 errors on the season and that is only 1 less than cantu. At least once a game carlos delgado has to jump and tag the runner on a throw from wright. Cantu does a nice job of picking the ball and has a good arm but he just needs to work on the arm slot.

 

On the other hand for everyone who thinks uggla is so bad defensivly, Chase Utley has 6 errors and that is one more than uggla. Not to mention that Uggla is now batting higher than Utley with merely 1 less homer and they both have the same 31 rbis.

I'm not sure how many people are knocking Uggla's defense this year. He's been pretty great out there and his range seems to have improved.

 

Also, I'm not sure that errors are the best indicator of how good a fielder is.

All I know is that Cantu needs to learn to throw to first base.

Why does Cantu deserve all of the blame? While I don't think error/fielding percentage are definitive means of measuring defensive ability, Cantu's numbers relative to his position are better than Ramirez's and Jacobs' are for theirs.

 

Ramirez has the most errors for NL shortstop by a wide margin (he has 8 while the second lowest is 5). His fielding percentage is the lowest in the NL by 9 points. Meanwhile, Jacobs has the fourth worst (out of 17) fielding percentage of NL 1Bs. While some of Cantu's throws could perhaps not be saved it certainly helps to have a defensively competent first baseman to salvage errant throws.

First of all, Wright in no way earned that GG last year. It was a gift. A .954 FPCT? I hate to say it, but Laaaarrrrrrryyyyyy got robbed. Big time.

 

I'm not so sure if it's the arm slot he needs to work on more or the foot work. He gets alot of his throwing errors by not planting and throwing high. That could also have something to do with hurrying the throw before he has the proper grip on the ball. "Rookie" mistakes. He's still learning the position. And Jake needs work on digging balls out of the dirt.

 

But those type errors are judgemental. For all teams. How many times do you see the ball hit the 1B in the glove and the error goes to the thrower if it isn't a strike-type throw?

Speaking of errors in general, it is really what has hampered this team this season, more so than the SP. Did Hill really have to leave the team, because he was a great teacher of the game.
