Roles in the bullpen?

Featured Replies

This year, we haven't had many save opps. so unlike most managers, Freddi hasn't really established that "7th inning guy," or "8th inning setup man."

I was just wondering...if you were to give EVERYONE in the pen a specific role right now, what would it be?

EDIT: Gregg, of course, would be the closer.

7th - Pinto/Lindstrom (depending on match-ups and would also use them as a combination)

8th - Kensing

9th - Gregg (If I must)

7th - Tankersley, Justin Miller, Kensing

8th - Lindstrom, Pinto, Gardner

9th - Kevin Gregg :sweating

Long Relief - Doug Waechter

Kensing and his 7.2 ERA in his last six appearances in the 8th? No thanks.

Pinto, Nelson, Gregg please.

Right and let's just ignore his 0.87 ERA through his first 9 appearences. But no, you're right, we should make the judgement based on his last six appearences only.

Btw, Miller has 2 starts to lower his ERA another 19 points for the sig bet.

I bet Benched that Miller would have his ERA under 6 within 4 weeks of his start against the Padres, which was 2 starts ago.

It was three weeks, which translated into 4 starts. Do you remember what the old thread was so we can bring it up? I remember you planned it out and wrote down all the teams he would start against during the 3 weeks, which was 4 teams.

your love for Joe Nelson amazes me.

You go on to bash Kensing for a 6 game stretch (when his overall #'s are "ok")...and you fully ignore the fact that our bullpen ERA is Top 10 in the big leagues (=not bad)...and answer this with a journeyman reliever, who's currently in AAA.

What has Nelson proven (in the BIG leagues) to move him to primary right-handed setup man (when our bullpen, in general, hasn't really struggled, overall)?

Nelson, from what's been written made the team out of spring training until the Marlins decided to keep their fifth starter with the team right away.

His spring training line was 2.45 ERA and a 10/1 K/BB, the important thing to consider is that strikeout to walk ratio. BTW he continues to do the same thing AAA where his line is 2.22 ERA, six stikeouts for every walk, and batters hitting .195 against him.

Like Waechter he's recovering for labrum surgery (only in his case multiple surgeries) he put off for a year and tried to pitch through in 2006, had the surgery and lost all of 2007, and now is back. I would guess his best use is certain spots where Fredi can use his talent. I wouldn't consider him as a regular role player, seventh, setup, etc. Right now he's pitched in 17 games and thrown 24 innings while collecting 10 saves. Conceivably he could be a "spare" closer if Gardner doesn't come back quickly enough or Justin Miller's problems worsen.

Kensing isn't the problem, he's a solution but he has to keep his head in the game.

I'd go:

Gregg - 9th (he's not dominant, but 7/8 gets the job done...and increases trade value if he keeps it up)

Pinto - 8th (he's been VERY GOOD...he's young. If he would limit the walks a bit, he'd flat out dominate)

Lindstrom - 7th (The guy has been pitching a bit better lately, and he throws 100 mph, with occasional nasty offspeed stuff; I think increasing his role, much like it has been done for Pinto this year, would give him some more confidence)

The rest?

I'd use Kensing in middle relief, as he's been used.

I'd limit Miller's role (as in MORE games, LESS innings)...Miller is not a 2 inning man; he'd make for a great "righty specialist."

Tank can be the "lefty specialist." (although Pinto would probably still face most of the tough lefties; I still trust Tank to get it together.)

Waechter is being used perfectly, imo.

i didnt read the thread but this is my roles.

closer= gregg

setup- pinto

setup- lindstrom

middle- miller

middle-tankersly

long- waechter

long- kensing

What has Nelson proven (in the BIG leagues) to move him to primary right-handed setup man (when our bullpen, in general, hasn't really struggled, overall)?

Take a look at some of his splits.

Pitch 1-25: 48 G, 40/26 K/BB, .250 BAA

In SV Situ: 15 G, 14/6 K/BB, .212 BAA

Late & Close: 29 G, 26/14 K/BB, .233 BAA

Innings 7-9: 42 G, 41/21 K/BB, 23 R, .239 BAA

Long story short, he's as solid as they come in clutch situations and late in games. Perfect 7-8-9 type guy with plenty of experience. If Miller continues to struggle, he's got to be the next guy in line to take over the setup role.

he's in AAA. You can use the PCL factor, which makes pitchers struggle...but I'll just counter and say, the quality of the hitters in the PCL, doesn't even compare to the quality of the hitters in MLB.

...I wouldn't mind calling up Nelson; but I'd say he should work his way (against big league hitters), before just handing him a setup role.

Tank isn't a lefty specialist until lefties start batting under .350 against him, as far as I'm concerned.

no doubt, he has struggled, but his career stats (BEST sample size of all) are certainly much better than that.

I think Tank has proven to be a lot better than the crap he's shown thus far...I still think he'll turn it around, simply b/c he's done this before.

well, then I must credit you for your research. :notworthy

I still think he should work his way (WITH US), in that role.

I do think Nelson deserves a callup, though.

Awesome game & good step for Miller. This division's looking really tough, if we didn't already know it. Only 1 team with a losing record and even they've won 8 of 10.

It was cool seeing him get the better of a future Hall of Famer but if he doesn't have a similar game his next time out against Washington, who are only hitting .239, he's gotta go.

Even if he has a rough outing against Washington, he won't be sent down. They don't demote people just like that, especially after they have gone out and shown they can be solid which is what Miller did in his last start. The fact that he was a center piece of the deal with Detroit also helps.

I think getting through 6 innings was huge for Andrew. Just the fact that he has done it will give him confidence in the back of his mind and the knowledge that he can do it again. My prediction is that Nolasco will be in the bullpen within 3 weeks and Miller will have his ERA under 6 by that time.

Miller will have his ERA under 6 in three weeks? Sig bet?

Anyways, the Padres are the worst hitting team in the league. It's not like he went out and beat a team full of sluggers. The only consistently good bat in that lineup is Adrian Gonzalez and he homered. A two run outing, while it is encouraging, is not enough to warrant him a spot on this team after he allowed 26 runs in his first 6 starts, none of which were longer than 5 innings. If he gets roughed up (again) in Washington, he should be sent down, Nelson should be brought up and Waechter should join the rotation.

Not sure what a sig bet is, but I'll stand by my prediction. The odds are against me and it might not be within 3 weeks, more like 5 or 6 starts. Forgot to include the fact that he started today which means he'll only get 4 starts over the next 3 weeks.

As far as him being sent down (assuming he gets roughed up in Washington), it's in the organiztion's hands, not ours. And based on the patience they have shown with him so far, I doubt they will send him down after 1 more bad start, especially after he had his best outing of the season so recently.

It also depends how you define "roughed up". I consider it an outing of 5 or less innings pitched and 5+ runs allowed.

Edit: Ok, just read about the sig bet. I accept, but are you taking the 3 weeks or the 5 starts? :mis2

Double Edit: Don't kno what happened here, but for some reason I quoted instead of edited my last post...sorry.

Three weeks. He should get Washington, Cincinnati, Arizona and San Francisco. If he gets sent down before the bet's over, we'll call it a draw.

By the way, earlier this year, Miller gave up 6 runs in 3.1 innings to the same Nationals he's facing in his next start. Only now they've won 8 of their last 10 games.

You're right, 30plus. My bad.
