Do the Pirates have lower attendance than the Marlins?

Featured Replies

I was looking at pirates attendance and it looks like they have less than the marlins usually. Sure they got a lot for their series recently with the Yankees, but they usually get about 8-10 thousand each night on weekdays while the Marlins usually get 11-12 thousand. And on Saturdays the Marlins get between 25 and 35K while pittsburgh only gets 15-20K.

So who has lower attendance this year overall so far? And why do you think they have it so low, they 've got a new ballpark and all.......do you think this will happen to the marlins even after they get the new ballpark? i hope not....but it proves that even with a new ballpark, if the team always struggles like the pirates, they will not draw a lot of fans.

dont even kid yourself about saturdays the only time we got 35k plus was vs the Padres and it was probaly because of El Gran Combo performing after the game, other than that we have not gone past 30k.

Not to change the subject but.... how many World Series titles do we have in 15 years.... hmmm i believe the answer is

What does that have to do with anything?

I think he was referring to how the Pirates fans have an excuse for not going to games: that their team has been bad for a long time. The Marlins have won two world championships though in the last 11 years so the fans should support the team more, as we have at least been somewhat competetive almost every year in the last five and have won the world series a couple of times recently. Pittsburgh hasn't been good in a long time so that's probably why they don't get a lot of fans.

And yeah i saw that we only had 30K or more in two games so far, but we do get 25K or more in most saturday games. Like last night for example i think there was between 27 and 28 thousand. I was there, a great game with the postgame concert with KC and the sunshine band (even though we didn't win). The pirates have a lot of Sat. games where they get less than 20K which is less than the Marlins. But i see how it evens out since we have had some lower lows on weekday games.

Hopefully our attendance will go up at the new stadium, and I think it will, as long as the team stays competitive. If we turn into the Pirates though then the attendance will stay low even at a new stadium. I don't think that will happen though because Beinfest has the eye for good players and they also agreed to raise the payroll once we get into the new stadium.

The Pirates are exactly what we DON'T want to become though. And that game against them on a Sat. in early April was low attendance because nobody wants to see the pirates since they have been consistently the worst team in the league for so long.

Once again, the Marlins and the Pirates both even out at about an average 23,000 fans at Saturday games.

our 11-12,000 is really 5-6,000

Not sure that's true, but everyones actual attendance numbers are lower than posted.

One of the few exceptions I think are the Red Sox. Going to many games you see very few empty seats and always loaded standing room. Not really related but by Sept. 3rd they should be passing the Indians record for consecutive sellouts.

Also, The Pirates average fairly high they are in the late teens low 20's over the past 10 years I think. Not great, but I am sure the new stadium did that and now that after 8 years the team hasn't changed much people arent excited to see the park anymore.

A new stadium will created a buzz for a couple of years but that will soon wear off if you lose and if you don't give your fans any hope of winning. I think their attendance is so low because they are one of if not the most losingest franchise over the past ten years and not only that but because their management is so cheap and incompetent their fans never have hope they'll turn it around. They have a new stadium but don't spend money and what they spend they piss it away (i.e. Matt Morris).

I will say that is very impressive that they are going to beat that. The past few seasons, all 81 games have been sold out prior to opening day. However it should be noted they play in the smallest stadium in the league. They have increased capcity the past few seasons, so they hold about 38,000 now. For much of the streak they were paying infront of 34,000, which is roughly 10,000 less than Cleveland.

It is small, but not 34,000 --- I think in 2003/04 when it started they were around a 35,500 seat capacity. Now they are at about 37,800. They do depending on standing room reach 38,000. While it is much smaller, I think they could sell out a 50,000 stadium for this streak also. The impressive thing is tickets are the most in baseball and they still sellout with in minutes on ticket sales day.

I think we will see this more with teams going to smaller stadiums - mets, yankees, a's, marlins (not consistently), and other teams that smaller size makes more sense and we will see more sellouts. The Yankees average over 50,000 but are only at 92% capacity average so they will be like the sox and average over 100% and play with ticket prices.

remember these words around 2014 when the ticket prices keep the Marlins from drawing in the new park........the good news is by then Loria will have to give up and sell to a local owner.........
