How come Wiley doesn't get any blame for what's going on with the relievers?

I mean, I understand he's not on the mound, but he gets paid to be a pitching coach, no?

 

I could accept it, if our relievers flat out sucked...but they don't.

 

They are tough to hit, when they throw strikes.

 

Why is it that our "setup guy" has 30 walks, in about 46 innings, and our "closer" is close to 30, already?

 

Gregg and Pinto have had their control issues throughout, but I don't recall it ever being this bad.

 

Last night, Justin Miller had a 4 pitch leadoff walk, as well.

 

...and as far as Kevin Gregg goes, it seems to be a philosophy for him, that walking batters isn't such a "bad thing."

 

Well, it is.

 

If it was 1 guy, I'd blame the 1 guy, but it's getting to the point where every reliever except for Waechter (and maybe Nelson) has control issues, lately. It's tough not to look at the pitching coach when that happens.

I think pitching and hitting coaches are overrated there is only so much you can do... you teach them the mechanics but you can't make someone throw strikes or swing at strikes.

Justin Miller was great last year, but crappy before that. I'm not sure you can blame Wiley.

 

Pinto is being overworked like mad, which is why he is getting worse. I'm not sure you can blame Wiley.

 

Gregg...well..Gregg was great last year as well, especially in the first half. But he's been regressing back to the way he was pitching when he was just a MR for the Angels. I'm not sure you can blame Wiley.

Coaching is overrated, especially a pitching coach.

 

I can see blaming the HC for making a dumb move but not much a pitching/hitting coach can do.

Why does St.Louis pitching coach, for example, get a lot of credit for what he does?

 

I agree...they can be overrated, but there is a point to their job.

 

I mean, Gregg's opp. avg is pretty darn good. He, sometimes, comes in, and throw strikes, and looks dominant. He's capable, yet he doesn't do it, consistently for some reason. Did you see the article that came out? With Gregg saying he doesn't see the big deal in walking batters, as long as he gets out of it? It seems like Gregg and the coaching staff are ok with his style...it's a style though...it's basically "playing with fire."

 

You could be right...I don't even know what Wiley tells his pitchers. I'm just saying, it's been a consistent theme for a month now, and I think our relievers have good stuff.

The bullpen is overused. It isn't that hard to figure out.

I think the main job of the pitching coach is scouting the hitters and then coming up with an approach for how to pitch to them based on the strengths and weaknesses of each pitcher. Sure there are some mechanics issues to work on but in general the more tinkering you do with a guys delivery the more inconsistent they get. Case in point -Dontrelle Willis. The main thing is pitch location and there's not much a pitching coach can do about that. Location is the most important thing a pitcher needs to control and that's entirely up to him. IMO.
