July 12, 200817 yr Who was Xavier Nady at the age of 24, again? How about we wait till Hermida reaches his prime? Clearly, even if you do want to trade him, his trade value isn't at its highest right now, so why do it? ...and for Xavier Nady? Is he really a "need" on this team? Btw...trading Maybin makes no sense.
July 12, 200817 yr If Baker turns out to be the answer at catcher, then forget about trading for a catcher. But if he doesn't, then that's a place we need to look for someone else down the stretch. I think we should go after some relief pitching as well. Maybe a closer, maybe a good set-up man. Pinto is good but Gregg is very shaky, sometimes he's great, other times he sucks. The other place we could look for is first base. I'm in favor of Cantu being the 1B and McPherson or Helms playing third, but if Fredi doesn't think that's an everyday option, then maybe looking for a first baseman would be a good idea. I think that Jacobs should be placed on the trading block. Also, placing Hermida on the block for a catcher or pitcher wouldn't be a bad idea, as I think Gonzo could do an excellent job filling in for him. Gonzo is old though so i don't know if they just want to throw away a younger guy like Hermida in favor of a 40-year old who will retire in a few years.

Hermida is very young, but he is still a decent player. I dont think his value will get much higher in the future. Most teams know that he will develop into a great player.
July 12, 200817 yr The difference between a .270 hitter and a .300 hitter over the course of 500 at bats (base number = a season) is fifteen hits or roughly one extra base hit every two weeks. Hermida is hitting in the .250s but giving him the .300 benchmark because the guy is capable of hitting there even if not so far this season, if we could replace him with a better defender who covered more ground with a plus arm (which Hermida has, unfortunately it's his head for baseball that is in question) but hit .270 and 15+ homeruns a season I'd make the move. I'd like to find a player more or less Hermida's age (and I love what Gonzo has contributed, I just don't see him out there with what's left of his throwing arm being an asset in anything other than platoon and emergency situations) but I'd give up those six hits over the course of the rest of the season if the guy knew when to throw home and when to throw to second ahead of a runner, or could hit his cut-off man with some consistency and get a decent jump on the ball (and dare I say play with some fire). So I'm giving Hermida the benefit of the doubt on batting to the high side and exchanging him for something less at the plate but better and smarter defense. In reality what you're doing is prepping for next season's arbitration process by picking Willingham over Hermida with the hope his replacement can contribute in ways we have been deficient all season. Hermida has had his chance to blossom into the can't miss superstar he was touted to be and with another team might become, but unless he gets a touch of the smarts and his bat comes alive in the next ten days he might be better off in a new environment, and so would the team. Jeremy Hermida is a bonafide major leaguer with good credentials. He's going to be a survivor and have a long career. I just don't think he's the fit here he could be somewhere else and hopefully with the trading deadline approaching other GMs have some interest.
July 12, 200817 yr I think we can dangle Hermida or Jacobs for some good pitching. yeah, we should dangle them to try get either Erik Bedard or Brian Fuentes.

July 12, 200817 yr J Papelbon Or M. Rivera. can't go wrong. u can't go wrong, so I guess we will trade our entire team away for them and have Papelbon or Rivera throw the pitch, run all the way to home plate and catch it, if the player hits it then Rivera or Papelbon will run chasing after the ball, lets let them play every position. That is a great idea.
