Umm...collecting big checks. We got $900K to play Texas. We also have 2-1 deals with Michigan State(they come down here in 2010, which should be the opener of our stadium on campus) and Minnesota (we beat them here last year). Most schools in the Sun Belt play at least 2 "money games" a year. FIU played Kansas and Iowa this year...Troy plays LSU and Ohio State this season. Besides the money, this has been Schnellenbergers MO since his days at Miami. You play the best teams possible, that's how you get better. You'll lose a lot of the time, but it is great experience for conference play.

We've beaten highly ranked Louisville, West Virginia and Auburn teams and only because of that one point at last season when EVERYONE else was losing, the only reason we got the #2 spot is because we were undefeated. Had anyone else been undefeated against weaker competition, they would have been ahead of us. For the program to progress, we do have to abandon the second-tier, it's no different than UF, FSU and Miami. They don't take the non-BCS Florida schools seriously, why? Because it's just not good for the program, but they don't get hassled for it... it's expected that they play the higher profile schools, we're on the cusp of being a regularly ranked team and being mentioned with UF, FSU and UM, we have to do the same things they do. BTW, and I'm sure you know this, FAU is already ahead of UCF in terms of their football program, IIRC they were the ONLY team to win a bowl game last season, they too, will soon pass UCF unless UCF changes the way they do things. When I said these things, I wasn't taking a shot at FAU, a school on the rise, but UCF a school that's apparently stagnated.

Ohio State, and yes, I can't stand them, has that history factor where all they basically have to do is show up each season and they're ranked... which is BS, but I guess you agree with me on that. As far as Grothe, if and when he leaves, success begets success... the more successful we are, the better we can recruit... yada yada, Grothe's been HUGE for the program, no doubt, he's setting records every game he plays (Just recently passed McNabb in Big East QB Rushing IIRC), but I hardly think we'd be 0-12 without him, in college football, the system is king, and Leavitt's done something right to take players that couldn't go elsewhere in FLA and turn them into what they are... guys like Mike Ford (who was spurned by Alabama), and Selvie et al... As things currently stand, and being a UM fan before I went to USF, I'd say right now USF could beat UM, so it's hard to say they'd be a grease spot on Miami's (you said roster, I think you mean...-) schedule. As far as UF, I don't know if the defense could keep up, but offensively we could put up a fight against UF. As far as regretting losing UCF, I completely disagree... UCF offers nothing that can't be found elsewhere in the country, even if it's a fringe ranked team like Fresno State or TCU or something

There's a difference between the 1-AA opener/warmup, and I have NO idea why FSU would schedule 3 teams like that, despite being ranked, that program is in a VERY precarious position with Bowden considering retiring and their (and UM's) recent slides. One could argue that they're "rebuilding" so if you're rebuilding, why schedule out of conference heavyweights? That doesn't help you at all. Whereas, USF, on the rise for the next couple of years, gets to replace UCF with a more high profile program while they can take them. If (as Orlando Rays) suggested, we apparently forget how to play football and go 0-12, we can re-visit playing in-state again, but I don't think it's this glaring thing. As far as your argument goes a loss is a loss, if USF loses to a comparably ranked team than UCF, it's still gonna hurt them, so, why not play a team ranked 20-30th over UCF? You get the bonus of playing a more competitive team, if you lose, you lose against a ranked (or darn close) team as opposed to a team that's not on that bubble, and you get the added bonus of "legitimacy" by playing more notable teams... there's WAY more to gain NOT playing UCF... As for the rivalry, it's a rivalry like the Steelers vs New Browns... only one side wins and the two schools hate each other. Miami's reputation has been damaged so badly that they haven't received one point in the AP poll this year, not even in preseason. At least UCF has received points in the AP poll. And judging from Randy Shannon's demeanor lately, I don't see Miami's situation improving any time soon.

September 20, 200817 yr FSU has their first test of the season... Yeah dude... Those first two games against Western Carolina and Chattanooga were just a little bit too easy for my liking. The Noles have a VERY young O-line going up against an experienced Wake Forest defense...I hope they can hang in there. I'm also excited to see Christian Ponder play against an actual team. Should be a good game.

Its not a rivalry though USF outscored UCF 150 - 53 dating back to 2005... 64-12 last year... that was without Grothe in most of the game too... USF is a ranked school and on the move up, playing schools like FSU, UM, and UF are next on their slate, not stomping UCF year after year... after year... Hence why Kansas was scheduled last weekend for the Bulls. They are not the same little no name conference team they were a few years ago. They are the Big East, and arguably the best team in their Conference.
