I ran across the "value" stat on a site that is new to me- FanGraphs. Looking through the Marlins' players I saw that Hermida's value last year was listed at $3.5M, down from $10.2M in 2007. I LOLed when I saw that his 2006 value was -$1.1M (yeah, it was a negative number.)

I agree with everyone that Hermida's getting way overpaid. And to the fellow pointing out Hermida's one nice statistic - there's a relevant factor known as consistency. Hermida has never been consistent and he's never performed well for an entire season. His last season was a regression and I'm really unaware of exactly what people expect is going to change to allow Hermida to play all season the way he did the second half of 07. I mean if he couldn't get motivated before his first year of arbitration to bust his but and earn a bigger payday by performing well last year, what could possibly change it?

 

And I wish they would just go ahead and pay Uggla. At worst, Uggla is the second best player on the team and he is also, at worst, among the top 3 2B in MLB. I can't even understand why they haven't given him a multi-year deal, even if it would be smaller than Hanley's.

 

That's your opinion, but just because he did bad last year, doesn't mean he's going to perform bad this year. He is only 25 years old, after all.

 

As for Uggla, I wouldn't be mad if we traded him. Right now, we can get am amazing prospect for him. I'm talking about a top 5 prospect from a desperate team.

No one is saying it's a guarantee. But if you see something that logically leads you to the conclusion (or even belief) that Hermida will turn around after a year of regression in which he had the starting job to return to his peak production and be more consistent than he has ever been in his 3 MLB seasons, I would very much like to hear it. And I certainly hope it is something more substantive than he is just 25. He did well for half a season as a 23 year old and then flopped as a 24 year old. If he turns it around and becomes among the top OF in baseball, I'll be as happy as anyone, but I don't see any reason to expect it.

 

As for Uggla, I think trading him would be stupid - if I make the assumption that this team is serious about being competetive. If the FO would be happy to just throw this season away as a rebuilding period, then sure, trade away a top player in his prime with a nice price tag for prospects who may or may not pan out in a few years. Even amazing prospects have a chance of not panning out. If this team wants to be competetive within the next few years, it makes all the sense in the world to make sure Dan Uggla is playing 2B, and it would make no sense to be starting Robert Andino, Chris Coghlan, or anyone else at 2B instead.

 

What makes you think he's gonna have a bad year? It's not like he's a 35 year old journey man. He's 25 years old with a lot of potential. You keep him.

 

Trading Dan Uggla wouldn't hurt us that bad. We will get an amzaing prospect for him with his value at it's highest right now. But, I would like to keep him. Trade him next off season. We're competing this year.

seriously, trading Uggla for more prospects would be a TERRIBLE idea, since they would lose a lot of there already non existent fan base. The Marlins need to dedicate some money to Uggla to show to the fans that they are trying to stop being as stingy. Getting more prospects does not help this team, and as most of you know, the Marlins will have to show that they can be competitive before they enter the new stadium, and if they keep trading for more and more prospects, what happened to the Nationals will happen to us.

have we gone to the playoffs consistently? 2 years in a row ever? No, and its because we get these prospects, and once they deserve the cash, the marlins aren't willing to pay it and trade them for more prospects. Uggla was a prospect as well as much of the current team from 2006, and now that most have for the most part proved themselves, they deserve to get paid, we aren't willing to pay the ones that deserve the higher salaries such as the Uggla's? Come on, I don't believe i am the only one that sees this trend.
