January 20, 200917 yr Jeremy Hermida has reached agreement on a one-year contract, as the Marlins avoided going to arbitration hearings with their left-handed hitting outfielder. The deal is for $2.25 million. Hermida, who is switching from right field to left field, is eligible for arbitration for the first time. He batted .249 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs last year. The Marlins had entertained trade talks regarding Hermida, but opted to retain the former first-round pick in 2002. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/...rbitration.html
January 20, 200917 yr And all these one-year deals are scaring me... These players are still in their arbitration years. A 1-year deal here just means "We settled for 2009, we'll worry about 2010 later (but you're still under team control [in most cases]).

Yeah I just did some more research on the whole arbitration thing. I'm still hoping to see Uggla, Ricky, and Cody on here in the next few days.
January 20, 200917 yr Good job. We'll decide to sign players for longer contracts when they prove to us they are worth it.
January 20, 200917 yr Too much money for Hermida. agreed, he should pay us to keep him. No, not really.
January 20, 200917 yr Too much money for Hermida. agreed, he should pay us to keep him. Yeah, who needs a guy who's shown he's capable of producing an .870 .OPS in the big leagues? We should've let him go, and let Bonifacio play...everyday...b/c his name is Emilio.
January 20, 200917 yr Too much money for Hermida. agreed, he should pay us to keep him. Taking it a bit far don't you think? I agree with the original poster though. Had we given Cantu what he deserved, this signing probably wouldn't have happened today.

I definently want hermi over emilo but imo pitchers have figured hermi out and so far he's shown he deoant adjust well which is every thing in baseball. I personally think this year is make or break for him with us.
January 21, 200917 yr The less distractions the guy has the better, this is a good thing. I thought it was a little high for the guy. But just by a little bit. I'll go with your thought. He gets at least a partial year to show his stuff at a new position.
January 22, 200917 yr Good signing 1 Yaer so its make or break for Jeremy He either proves to us that can play up to his abilities or he's gone.
January 22, 200917 yr Another bowl of Hermida Fail for us to chew on for another year. Can't wait till hermida makes you eat crow.
January 23, 200917 yr Another bowl of Hermida Fail for us to chew on for another year. Can't wait till hermida makes you eat crow. I'd love to see it, but I don't expect it. I agree with everyone that Hermida's getting way overpaid. And to the fellow pointing out Hermida's one nice statistic - there's a relevant factor known as consistency. Hermida has never been consistent and he's never performed well for an entire season. His last season was a regression and I'm really unaware of exactly what people expect is going to change to allow Hermida to play all season the way he did the second half of 07. I mean if he couldn't get motivated before his first year of arbitration to bust his but and earn a bigger payday by performing well last year, what could possibly change it? And I wish they would just go ahead and pay Uggla. At worst, Uggla is the second best player on the team and he is also, at worst, among the top 3 2B in MLB. I can't even understand why they haven't given him a multi-year deal, even if it would be smaller than Hanley's.

That's your opinion, but just because he did bad last year, doesn't mean he's going to perform bad this year. He is only 25 years old, after all. As for Uggla, I wouldn't be mad if we traded him. Right now, we can get am amazing prospect for him. I'm talking about a top 5 prospect from a desperate team.

But if you see something that logically leads you to the conclusion (or even belief) that Hermida will turn around after a year of regression in which he had the starting job to return to his peak production and be more consistent than he has ever been in his 3 MLB seasons, I would very much like to hear it. And I certainly hope it is something more substantive than he is just 25. He did well for half a season as a 23 year old and then flopped as a 24 year old. If he turns it around and becomes among the top OF in baseball, I'll be as happy as anyone, but I don't see any reason to expect it. As for Uggla, I think trading him would be stupid - if I make the assumption that this team is serious about being competetive. If the FO would be happy to just throw this season away as a rebuilding period, then sure, trade away a top player in his prime with a nice price tag for prospects who may or may not pan out in a few years. Even amazing prospects have a chance of not panning out. If this team wants to be competetive within the next few years, it makes all the sense in the world to make sure Dan Uggla is playing 2B, and it would make no sense to be starting Robert Andino, Chris Coghlan, or anyone else at 2B instead.
January 23, 200917 yr Good signing 1 Yaer so its make or break for Jeremy He either proves to us that can play up to his abilities or he's gone. In this situation, a 1-year deal does not mean we only get to keep him for a year. He is still under team control until after the 2011 season. A player is eligible for arbitration after 3 years of service time (or 2 in certain situations called "Super Two", but you don't need to worry about that right now). In this case, Hermida has 3.003 years of MLB service time, which means this was his first year of arbitration eligibility. In this situation though, the Marlins opted to skip arbitration and give him $2.25 M contract for 2009. Year 1 (2006) $0.327 M Year 2 (2007) $0.380 M Year 3 (2008) $0.395 M Year 4 (2009) $2.250 M Year 5 (2010) ? Year 6 (2011) ? Red= arbitration eligible So next year in January of 2010, the Marlins will either go to arbitration with him or avoid arbitration with him alltogether by giving him another one year deal. Same goes for 2011. Then he's a Free Agent after the 2011 season ends... unless the Marlins choose give him a contract extension before that. Get it? Hope that helped.
January 23, 200917 yr I ran across the "value" stat on a site that is new to me- FanGraphs. Looking through the Marlins' players I saw that Hermida's value last year was listed at $3.5M, down from $10.2M in 2007. I LOLed when I saw that his 2006 value was -$1.1M (yeah, it was a negative number.)
