Posted May 7, 200916 yr This stat is what worries me most about this team. The "timely hitting" has been non existent this year (and no, I do not count late inning heroics against the Nationals... its the NATIONALS). The bullpen, for the most part, has been just fine. The starting pitching, for the most part, has been good enough. Our offense is so unbelieveably inconsistent that we are throwing away games in the late innings and putting ALL the empasis on our young pitching staff. If something doesn't change with the hitting on this team, I see us finishing 4th in the division. Can we get a SP a freakin' win?
May 7, 200916 yr The starting pitching, for the most part, has been good enough. The starter's ERA is 13th in the NL and that's not good enough.
May 7, 200916 yr While I agree its unacceptable that a starter hasnt won for 19 games, I disagree with the sub-heading you put on the thread "you can't even blame the bullpen". On the whole they have actually done ok but need I remind you of the Lindstrom-Philly game? We were 3-0 after 8 and JJ was all set for the win which would have ended a 6 game streak without a starter win. Then the following night Volstad left after 7 innings and we were up 4-3 before losing the game. Obviously a 1 run lead is a tight game and not as much blame can be put on the pen as the previous night but nonetheless there is still some blame on them. Finally last Saturday in Chicago, Graham Taylor actually pitched well and departed after 5 with a 5-2 lead. Once again the pen coughed it up and so the streak continued to 14 games at that point.

Stats CAN be misleading. For instance, you can win 4 games in a row by a combined 83 runs to scored to 10 runs allowed margin... and then lose 10 games in a row by 1 run... your record would be 4-10 (thats bad) but your run differential would be exellent (+70 more or less)

I do remember that philly game, I was there to witness that crap. you came up with two or three instances over the course of 18 games that the bullpen blew it... what about the other 15 games?
May 7, 200916 yr Author I think last night and the Reds game we won in extras are perfect examples.... last night, 1st and 3rd nobody out and we cant even push across one run... extra inning game, only way we won that game was because of an error, the bullpen kept us alive, and we left the bases loaded twice in the extra frames... unacceptable

Thats why I mentioned that on the whole the bullpen has done ok. If we had won that first Philly game the streak would have ended at 6 and nothing would of been made about it. Not too much point reflecting on it because what happened, happened. But the pen has still coughed up a few.

May 7, 200916 yr I would say that it is not the bullpen's fault we're losing right now. No bullpen is going to be perfect and they've been decent enough only blowing a couple of games. We've had about 6 good starts since before the Washington series. The offense has been pathetic and we've made many many mental mistakes both on the basepaths and defensively. This is a very flawed team that's also playing bad. They won't be this bad the rest of the way but many things are going to have to turn around before we're back on track.
May 7, 200916 yr I don't get why people are making such a big deal about this stat. I could understand if we were like 11-7 in our last 18. But we have only 4 wins in that span. So that's 4 wins where our starter got a no decision. When your offense can't do crap and you lose almost every game in that stretch, this state completely makes sense.
May 7, 200916 yr the Nationals... its the NATIONALS Somewhere in there, I think you were trying to say "Natinals." Perhaps, if our uniform provider screws up, we'll be the "Mrlins," or the "Marlns" but "Marlins" is much harder to make a mess of than is "Nationals." Although, their idiot vendor did also manage to provide them with uniforms that had the "N" in "Nationals" upside-down. As for this thread, it doesn't really matter who gets any given win.
