Posted May 14, 200916 yr It appears as if the Red Sox are shopping Brad Penny around due to the fact that they have good SP rotation depth and multiple injuries to starting infielders (which is what they would want in return). I've been hearing rumors swirling that the Fish might try to make a trade for Penny. (mostly from Olney's blog and a friend of mine that is an assistant with the Marlins FO) Just curious, if you were the Marlins front office, would you make the trade for Penny, and who would you include in it?
May 14, 200916 yr No Why not? Because he hasn't been good at all since '07, and he's overpaid. The prospect I'd give wouldn't be very good.

May 14, 200916 yr Yes, if the prospect isn't a highly-ranked one. Penny has been good, if not great almost every year of his career except for one, last year. You could maybe blame this year's slow start on transitioning from the NL to the AL. It's worth a shot, and I'll pretty much take anyone if the back of the rotaion woes keep on going on. Again though, only if it's for very little.
May 14, 200916 yr I voted yes but that is contingent on how hard a push we're talking about. Adding Penny doesnt make this team an instant contender. Plus I get the feeling that they dont want a prospect, this is not dumping a player they want a major league infielder and probably one that can start. So who fits that bill on the Marlins that we can do without and doesnt have a great upside for the future with this team? hmmm...So I guess my answer is really no. Besides if they are willing to add some payroll to get Penny why dont they just sign Pedro for 3-4 million? He's available and likely to give you as much as Penny would and we wouldnt have to mortgage the future to get him.
May 14, 200916 yr Give them Uggla!!!!!!! But I dont see Boston doing that lol I'm sure the Marlins wouldn't either. What a terrible deal that would be.
May 14, 200916 yr I would do it in a second if it was a low level prospect and if the majority of his contract is being paid by the Red Sox. He has not been good in a couple of years, but would he not be a better option than John Koronka?
