May 28, 200917 yr LOL Suddenly, the good times are rolling for the Marlins, who used Wednesday night's bus trip to NYC as a chance to endulge in the baseball tradition of rookie hazing. Several Marlins rookies, including Sean West, Cristhian Martinez and Chris Coghlan, were made to dress up in skirts and other goofy outfits for the ride to New York. Typically this is done in September after the callups get here, and perhaps this year's team will take another run at it later. But veteran Wes Helms took the lead and decided to stage the stunt now, with some help from Dan Uggla and others. "It's not the typical rookie hazing," Uggla said before the outfits were broken out. "It's not like we're going to drop them off in the middle of New Jersey or anything." Remember, Uggla didn't get a chance to get hazed until last year, when Luis Gonzalez made him dress up as a rat -- yes, a rat. That's because Uggla, a two-time All-Star, missed out on the tradition as a rookie in '06 when the Joe Girardi Marlins blew a big lead in Atlanta during the September wild-card drive and opted to leave the Hooters costumes in the lockers, never to be worn by a team with WAY too many kids. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_baseball_marlins/2009/05/florida-marlins-marlins-do-some-rookie-hazing.html
May 28, 200917 yr Funny story... Wes Helms is becoming the club house leader. It's funny, because in a few different interviews lately I've heard different guys talk about clubhouse guys like "Wes and Hanley". Craziness.
