November 10, 200322 yr ATLANTA (SI.com) -- After back-to-back losses, Brock Berlin is out as Miami's starting quarterback, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Junior Derrick Crudup will start for the 'Canes on Saturday against Syracuse. Berlin has thrown 14 interceptions this season, including two in a 10-6 loss to Tennessee on Saturday. He has committed 17 of the team's 27 turnovers this season, and led the 'Canes to just one touchdown in the past two games. The Sun-Sentinel reported Miami coach Admin Coker told the team of his decision Sunday, saying the mobile Crudup gave UM its best chance to win. "The interceptions are unacceptable," Coker said after Saturday's loss, which dropped the 'Canes from No. 6 to No. 14 in this week's The Associated Press poll. "You look at some of the plays [berlin]made, just phenomenal throws and some great catches by some of the guys," Coker said. "But for a quarterback and where we are right now, the emotional and mental side of it is probably more important than the physical side of it." Coker said Berlin's confidence has been shaken after the last two games. The 6-foot-1 junior threw two interceptions that led to 14 points in last week's 31-7 loss at Virginia Tech, which snapped Miami's 39-game regular-season winning streak. In addition to his two interceptions against the Vols, Berlin also fumbled once, turnovers that helped the Vols end the nation's longest home winning streak at 26 games. Coker pointed out two other critical mistakes by Berlin. He underthrew Roscoe Parrish deep down the middle in the first quarter. He also missed Kellen Winslow uncovered at the goal line in the fourth quarter, an oversight that Coker said would have won the game. "If you see it on tape, it really makes you ill," Coker said. Crudup and Berlin battled for the starting job in the spring, but Berlin eventually won despite being outplayed in several scrimmages that were open to the public. Crudup's father criticized coaches, saying the decision wasn't fair and that race played a factor. Berlin is white, and Crudup is black. The younger Crudup kept quiet through it all, and has played well off the bench. He is 28-of-41 (68.3 percent) for 290 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. "When Derrick's had opportunities he's done pretty well with it," Coker said. "More than that, when he's been in the background he's been a pretty loyal supporter of our team. When things go well it's really easy. When things don't go well for you individually, that's a little tougher. Some people transfer, some people quit. "Derrick hasn't missed anything. He's on time, he conscientious, he works. That tells me something. And it tells our football team something." Berlin has completed 61.5 percent of his passes but has just nine touchdown passes in nine games. He hasn't gotten much help, either. The receivers have dropped several passes, the offensive line hasn't played well, and tailback Jarrett Payton has a banged-up shoulder that requires a cortisone shot before games. "There is some concern there," Coker said of Payton. "He's been pretty sore." Coker said changes on the line and in the running game also could happen this week. Still, as bad as things have been -- Miami has scored just one touchdown in two games -- the Hurricanes have plenty left to play for this season. With Pittsburgh's defeat of Virginia Tech on Saturday night, Miami can win the Big East Conference and earn a Bowl Championship Series berth -- probably in the Orange Bowl -- if it beats Syracuse and Rutgers at home, then wins at No. 16 Pitt on Nov. 29. "We still have a chance to achieve all the goals we've set," Coker said. "We set a goal to win the Big East championship and get a BCS bowl game. We still have that opportunity. ... That's amazing."
